A valid excuse for a GMT

My first GMT watch was a Panerai. I didn't have the watch bug back then, but I did travel with it and realized the GMT hand didn't really help. It did show another timezone but it wasn't immediately clear. I was traveling between US and Asia which crossed the date line. It took some mental calculation to figure it out.

So I said, yeah, GMT, big deal. I have since sold the watch and while I lusted over 1675 Pepsi's early in my watch-browsing routine, my taste moved on.

To me the Pepsi bezel is, as I've read somewhere which describes it quite well, goofy. Perhaps I'm the more serious kind so having red and blue in a watch isn't the look I like.

Then came a picture in Instagram of a solid gold 1675/8. I don't remember if it was credited properly but that's one of the coolest pictures of Rolex I've seen. One led to another and I was browsing the various GMT variants especially the nipple dials. Solid gold is not for me, but maybe I can see a rootbeer or a black two tone sometime soon.

What I like with the nipple dials is that despite the age, they don't show the age. I know patina is the name of the game for a lot of vintage guys but there is something else about an old watch that doesn't look old. And also the fact that it is somewhat undervalued/underappreciated in the world of GMTs create a special appeal to me.

As I analyzed pictures of the GMT I now see that the 24-hour bezel would work a lot better than a simple GMT hand in other watches. The GMT hand on the Rolex points out clearly the 2nd time zone on the bezel. You don't have to do any other calculation or figuring out AM/PM. It jumps right at you.

So now my excuse for a GMT is complete smile. Time to look for one.

My candidates are probably:
1. Root beer dial on strap (maybe get a steel bracelet)
2. Black two-tone 16573 also on strap (not a fan of 2 tone bracelets)
3. All black bezel 1675

The minus point of an all black bezel is it would probably be too similar to my Submariner.

A question for the GMT afficionados, do steel/two-tone models come with solid brown insert? I'm looking to minimize the split bezel look while still packing a "punch". I think the solid brown looks cool, although the mustard/brown blends somewhat nicely too.
