Your friends are not the only one ...
to think that Chopard is a jewellery maker.
And you are right that Chopard started as a watchmaker and ventured into jewelery at a later stage in 50's and 60's.
Somehow the jewellery segment gain more publicity than the watches.
In 1996, Mr Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President, returns back-to-the-root and started Chopard Manufacture and a new high horology line, the L.U.C.
If you have the time, please have a look at this post, which will provide better clarity of the seriousness of Chopard:

As for JLC and Rolex, they are good watches and solid brands too. Durability, I personally see they are on equal footing.
However with mechanical watches, there is somehow higher chance to have issue than a quartz. The marvellous thing is, you are wearing a miniature engine on your wrist than a piece of solid-state-chip. Nothing right or wrong, it is all dependent on your needs
Please feel free to ask us questions, and appreciate if you can forward the link of the Chopard Manufacture eTour to all your friends to clear some misconceptions. Thank you.

I hope I did not frighten you and I hope I can explain well in words. Mechanical watches are made of up of many components interacting with each others versus a chip which has all the connections already hard-wired in wafer form, and no moving parts. Thus...
