It is probability (to me)...

I hope I did not frighten you and I hope I can explain well in words.

Mechanical watches are made of up of many components interacting with each others versus a chip which has all the connections already hard-wired in wafer form, and no moving parts.  Thus, lesser chance for a non-moving part system to fail.

For the mechanical pieces, they are tested before leaving the factories.
Most of the time,  it is handling that causes issues.  I've mechanical watches like 60 over years ago, running accurately, if treated with care and service at regular interval.
A few common causes, like dropping the watch, subjecting to sudden shock and magnetization.

Ha...ok, the 'shaking' is for automatic watchessmile
If the automatic watch has stopped, shaking it will let the watch run for a while, better to turn like thirty to forty rounds on the crown to enable it to have more power.

Even the new quartz has improved.  Typically 18 to 24 months the battery should be flat.  The indicator is the second-hand will jump in block of 10 second instead of 1 second.

Hope I address your questions.
