Automotive

There is one proviso…

That the development costs in Automotive are drastically higher. Without knowing the exact figures I would judge Yamaha Music’s R&D expenses as a whole are not sufficient to develop a single engine version of an engine family, let alone a car. And that’s without counting the R&D that comes from the suppliers.

And Honda is a prime example of why this does not work. The core capability of excellent small internal combustion engines made them wholly miss the electrification of the garden and leisure appliances and vehicles. Now they have missed the boat and also do not generate nearly enough money to successfully play catch up. The Honda Jet - as much as I like the unique arrangement - is at best an irrelevant distraction and will never contribute to the bottom line in a meaningful capacity. The main - car - business is suffering from being too late in terms of electrification and due to Japanese suppliers not having developed a meaningful ADAS competence. They are far from dead and will continue to creep along for quite a while but a recovery to their erstwhile position is a very unlikely prospect.
