Is there ever too much garage space? (watch winder, wine cellar)
Aug 10, 2021,16:46 PM
I remember the days of living in England... garage in the back garden accessed only through a tiny gap between houses.
Parking 3 deep on the drive and a few on the lawn (neighbors at that point didn't mind)
At this point, in the Seventies, we lived in a small house with one garage.
I needed more room, so I widened the drive and put in a bigger gate. Oh yes, and added a second story to the house. Super-size the house, but I couldn't expand the garage onto the neighbor's lawn. đŸ˜–
But even back then, 40 years ago, I had too much vehicle, not enough parking. So I built a carport in the back for my Jeep and Trailer
Finally I got fed up (or my wife got mad at me, I forget) and we bought a bigger house with parking for 3 (carefully)
and a long driveway for larger vehicles.
But I still had more vehicles than garage space. But there was the joy of finding a 6-car space for rent...
and the subsequent despair when I found out the landlord was a conman and on his way to prison for fraud, embezzlement, and auto theft (not mine thankfully)
So I did some grading and fencing to provide parking "in the back garden"
but the road in/out wasn't suitable for Lotus, Jag or any conventional car.
This further discouraged me from bringing back some of the cars I owned in the UK, so I sold them.
BUt a friend offered us her garage for my Jaguar or Lotus.
Then she grew old, the house got sold, the garage taken away, and I had to sell some more cars...
Now I am looking (if you recall the 3 garages complete with Pig & Porscher) so what can I find?
This one was nicer than the Pig House! and far more spacious! Look how lonely that Jaguar looks back in the corner. And all the cabinets!
The wooden door in the photo below is 4" thick oak, fire resistant, and encloses a 20 x 15 foot room for storage of valuables and papers. Watches?
No, the watches have to go in the Safe, which is the black door with two separate key deadbolts. Normally it is hidden by a panel which slides right up against it.
However, this house is at the top of a hill and half my cars could neither get to the top, or cross the sharp rise from the street. And the house was too much for me to contemplate "running it".
Tomorrow however I am going to look at this house. Pretty neat, eh? But looks and photos can be deceiving!
Let's try it from this angle. Now you see 4 garage doors. Which door would you choose to get a prize?
If you select your door carefully (such as Door #3)
You get the prize - drive out the door in the back to the other garages in back!
This is going to be fun!
