Audemars Piguet

My opinion

The royal oak "jumbo" is pretty the same watch it was more than 40 years ago.

The same movement, the same bracelet, dial making and general finishing, with just minor changes to the case (cheaper because of the different way to make it) and buckles.
And a lot lower are the costs in order to produce them, because of the different volumes produced and the different production systems.
So i think the prices of these watches are more insane nowadays than they were in 72, despite the fact the salary/price ratio is still almost the same.

The Rolex comparison is a little bit odd, true is the fact there is not proportion between the price of a 5513 submariner and a 114060 one, but true is also the fact that a 114060 in front of a 5513 is a completely different (and far better made from every point of view) watch.
Grab both two without taking into consideration all the vintage rolex epic and the 5513 will appear you as a rough squeaky iron piece in front of one of the best made "professional" watch on the market with a very solid, consistent, confortable and easy to regulate deployant buckle that any royal oak have never seen in more than 40 years (still messing about unaesthetic and inconvenient half links, for example).

They are different watches with different values, but in my honest opinion if i have to assign the insanity price prize to one of these two watches i have any doubt the winner is just the royal oak.

Best regards

P.s: the list price of the royal oak ref. 5402 when launched in 1972 was 3.450 chf (as written in the Audemars Piguet book by Martin Wherli)
