For my own commentary on this, I actually prefer this over the Dato. Despite the missing date, I feel it is balanced by the "flyback chronograph" font. (Although, almost all promotional pictures of this watch shows the hands at 10:10 or 2:50 which balances the dial. This 1815 may look unbalanced during times like 4:40, etc..)
It also allows for a slightly thinner case...from a movement point of view, I believe the datograph required quite a bit of space under the dial for the date mechanism, but has a fair bit of remaining empty space on the dialside. This allowed the Dato perpetual to even cram in a full perpetual cal module without significantly changing its thickness over the standard datograph.
Nevertheless, the datograph u/d has some nifty upgrades over the standard 1815 chronograph. Besides the power reserve and date indicator, the subtly upgraded chronograph levers would also contribute to the price premium over the 1815 calibre. Eiher way, the current generation L951 movements are all amazing to me..extended power reserve and new balance wheel? Yes please!
Given the choice, I'd take this boutique ed chrono over the standard 1815 chrono, as the dial layout and printing feels just the right amount of balance over the fairly simplified standard chrono (in my humble opinion)..
