Of course there must be progression as in your example of chip ups for horses and torque etc. it is just taking a quick route when it can be taken. ie jumping to max that one can afford. Not right for all but right for some. Some get a thrill from small steps, some get a bigger thrill from exponential steps. The latter will say where's the fun in wasting time with incremental chip ups when you know you;re going to get to max power and can get to max power. It's like our good LKY said at a Fortune Forum in New York quite a while back in another context of course... there must be a fast track, if not, don;t bother. When the fast track is there and its not taken by choice.. that;'s another matter. Since there is to be progression, why not skip steps and go max if its available and attainable? That's more fun for me.
To align your progession comment.... Many novelties (from big brands and some indies of late) represent new color tones, marketing plays.. what progression is that? Your example of 1815 to DS.... is it really a progression? On what grounds? Pricing? Bragging rights to say I have a more expensive watch... ok.. if that matters. But no progression to me on those grounds. Perhaps a progression to a more complicated movement? Sure... Is the Dato movement really a progression to the 1815? I don't know but probably given the date function of the Dato. Is the DS a movement and complication progession to the Dato... I would imagine so with the addition of the split second complication. You know me well enough and my gripes... real progression is always welcome. The issue is the definition of real progression which is obviously subject to different strokes for different folks.
Progression sure... but let it be real progression!
