on the fence

May 11, 2024,17:28 PM

a month ago i have bought my odysseus wg and i really like it, in particular i do appreciate the craftsmanship, it feels like a very high quality watch.

so after this i thought i should get another a lange and what came to my mind was zeitwerk or datograph, with the additional benefit of automatically receiving an
allocation for an odysseus steel version.
i have excluded the zeitwerk date since it is too big for my mannequin wrist of 16,5 cm (see the pics) so - since i like roségold better than white metals my front runners are the
rose gold datograph up/down and the zeitwerk roségold.
i do have quite a few PP pieces, including the 5170P hand wound chrono, so the datograph would not bring a great new diversity into my collection - except the
wonderful big date function and the sculptural movement architecture. the zeitwerk instead is a watch that is unique and no other brand does a similar piece.
on the other hand i am asking myself whether it is not an acquired taste....
let me just make it clear, i am not aiming to start a lange collection,i am  just trying to choose one high end piece from them...
any help in my decision-making process is appreciated.

Better choice. But also a black dial Lange 1. I seem to recall that there is a 39mm. They make a wonderful world traveler but it’s 41mm ...

To have mannequin wrists is honest information. What is remarkable about the Zeitwerk is its big case. All horology must put into the case, so it became big. Small wrists not made for towers, and i do not understand ALS. Why other watch brands have sleek ...

RG Zeitwerk is beautiful

I see your dilemma...the ZW Date is awesome but quite large. I also wish they had a RG version. I had the opportunity to try the RG ZW and loved it...such a unique and beautiful watch. The RG and black dial combo works very well together. Since you alread...

i bought the WG odysseus from a grey dealer. late 2023 model, full set, still stickered and 15% under retail. unclear why a. lange makes such a fuss about the allocations....

No date on this one

 By: Medem : May 11th, 2024-18:21
Although the implementation of the date is clever, breaking the line of the central piece of Zeitwerk is a no. If you like how the watch sits on your wrist I would not look too much at the photos.

The outline

First and foremost who cares what anyone else thinks. Get the piece that speaks to you.

When asking for others’ opinions you are not sure their taste profile. It’s the same thing with art, restaurants, music etc Have confidence in your self not what others think. That said I have been tempted by the Zeitwerk but have not pulled the trigger. ...

imho it'd be their chimer. But considering the games ALS / Richemont has been playing with clients, at this time i can't recommend supporting ALS.

Agree and disagree

I think it is valuable to get opinion if on the fence. It doesn't mean he's trying to buy what the crowd favorite is or the hype pieces. Just between these two which look better. I did that recently when buying glasses, I was on the fence and asked my wif...

I totally understand what you say and in truth I have at times

sought the opinion of friends who I know and share the same esthetic. I know we all do it but I caution generalizing to the public who are unknown to you. Btw shopping for glasses is a totally different experience. I won’t buy a new pair without my wife’s...

Haha true

First thing that came to mind 🤣 my point is that asking for an opinion is not unreasonable. But maybe I'm unreasonable.. who knows🤷‍♂️

LOL!!!

If you have to ask then the answer is probably neither

 By: drgiggles : May 12th, 2024-01:44
Glasses seem like a stretched analogy. Unless you make it a point of keeping your sleeves rolled up so everyone can see your watch (or god forbid are a double-wrister)

Photo 3 - great looking watch

Love the Zeitwerk, don’t have the wrists for it though.

I love both of these. And tried this watch many time.

 By: gary_g : May 11th, 2024-19:47
But I think it’s too big for my 6.5 inch wrist. For me, black and rose is such a nice combo. And in either metal, this watch stands out so it’s not a matter of “quiet luxury.” I love the datograph also but this watch is so unique. It would be my preferenc...

I do like the current gen zeitwerk without date. Imho, it‘s got a more balanced dial, a better movement and it‘s slightly slimmer than the previous gens.

 By: nafetS : May 11th, 2024-20:12
It is of course not a standard watch, more acquired taste, but in a good way in my opinion. The reason I do not own a Zeitwerk is, because it‘s too top heavy for my taste. The watch is just too heavy and doesn‘t feel good on my wrist. I do also own a 5170...

Is the rose gold that top heavy?

 By: drgiggles : May 12th, 2024-01:45
Platinum can get downright painful to wear but I’d imagine the gold versions are much lighter.

Tried both platinum and rose gold.

 By: nafetS : May 12th, 2024-06:31
For me, the platinum one is unbearably top heavy. The rose gold is a lot less top heavy, but still a lot more than any other watch I have ever owned.

I owned the Up/Down and I’ve tried to buy a ZW for an about a decade.

 By: Jay (Eire) : May 11th, 2024-20:22
For me, unless you buy a Lange 1 those two are the pieces to own. I have a 6.25 inch wrist and I wore the Up/Down as a daily pretty much for several years. Try as I may, and believe me I tried a lot, I could never convince myself that the ZW (prior genera...

Zeitwerk rose gold 💯 not the datograph

 By: christianch : May 12th, 2024-00:25
I would certainly go for the most iconic, high end piece. The Zeitwerk is so unique that has no competition in any collection. The Datorgraph is nice but...not as unique in my opinion. Not as WOW.

thanks to all!

your very thoughtful comments are highly appreciated. i'll report back on how i decide.

It’s always good to have input and then the choice remains with you.

 By: Obeezy : May 29th, 2024-00:59
I’d go for the Zeitwerk. I do love the first gen Dato, but the Zeitwerk commands so much respect and attention. When I wear it to other brand’s boutiques they spend more time asking me about it than telling me about their watch! PP was the last one that d...
