Bracelet looks like from the JLC Master series and the clasp looks like it is also used by Glashütte and IWC.

Not a Code 11.59 disaster but certainly disappointing compared to my very high expectations.

Also who chopped off the left ear of the watch??!

I will obviously try to see it in person myself and am willing to be pleasantly surprised.

My watch collection shall remain unchanged: PP/VC/JLC/A&S/IWC.

Hands on review of the Lange & Söhne Odysseus

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-05:02
An important event was required (if not mandatory) to celebrate fittingly the 25th anniversary of Lange & Söhne. And the presentation of the new Odysseus watch, the first of the 6th family of the catalog is a milestone one. The 24th of October, 1994 w...

The bracelet is too wide... dial is amazing...

 By: edo.k : October 24th, 2019-05:07
Thanks for great review...

Thanks for your comment! [nt]

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:14

I agree! 👍🏻 [nt]

 By: MCG (Markus) : October 24th, 2019-14:25

Thank you for the great review, dear FX!

 By: jack johnson : October 24th, 2019-05:09
As to the watch itself - I say Nay. The bracelet seems to be heavily based on the IWC pilot's watch bracelet construction-wise (links removal system, clasp) and is not appealing to me aesthetically.

Thanks Jack! [nt]

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:14

Not sure about that bracelet...

 By: Codes : October 24th, 2019-05:16
Also surprised there are no models with other complications like power reserve, dual time, etc...

Thanks a lot for your real life photos that reveal more than the press renderings...

 By: shortys home : October 24th, 2019-05:17
... my initial feedback on the watch is that I like case, dial and mvmt, not a fan of the bracelet at all. This new Lange should look great on a sporty strap, though. Cheers Henrik

Agree 100% [nt]

 By: SamEE : October 24th, 2019-16:52

Great presentation & review.

 By: RGS : October 24th, 2019-05:22
Case and movement all good. The dial is pure ALS, but needs getting used to in the context of the steel sports watch theme. Bracelet and clasp are a design problem and look aesthetically inelegant. Put it on a composite strap and see what happens. I am no...

Thanks a lot for this excellent introduction to this new ALS timepiece, Fx.

 By: Pretty Boy : October 24th, 2019-05:33
As I said in a previous thread that was deleted (for good reason), I’m really positively surprised. It’s a fantastic looking sporty watch that is still recognizable as an ALS at first sight (which is a good thing). Its look is noticeably different from th...

Thank you for the great summary.

 By: Grisar : October 24th, 2019-05:40
The watch as well as the strap are not inspiring in my very own opinion though. It's bulky and without brilliant design elements. The movement is on par with the recent entry and medium level movements from Lange, no gold chatons any longer, the engraving...

I can see a gold chaton on the ¾ plate near the balance cock bridge.

 By: Boron : October 24th, 2019-07:58
There may be more under the rotor that’s prevent them from being seen.

Yes, correct [nt]

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:46

Excellent presentation review.

 By: VMM : October 24th, 2019-05:52
I like it because it's a Lange, but I feel nothing special. That bracelet, ouch! Thanks for sharing. Vte

I agree

 By: piccolochimico (aka dsgalaxy1) : October 24th, 2019-05:58
Why anyone should buy this one instead of a Lange 1? Because it's steel made? Because there's a bracelet? A pleasant watch, but not the Lange I like the most

Thanks Vicente! [nt]

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:47

Nice watch but

 By: aris d : October 24th, 2019-06:00
it isn't groundbreaking as the RO or the Nautilus was. Of course it will be sold well. Aris

Thanks for the review. I like this watch from Lange.

 By: M4 : October 24th, 2019-06:07
Very nice dimensions. Nice dial symmetry and displays. And I like the bracelet. This one's not on my short list, though, until it's available in a dial color other than blue. I have a serious case of the blues, which has been the fad color of choice for t...

Hmmm... I'm sure MC can help you out. Let me ponder some purchases for you...

 By: MichaelC : October 24th, 2019-09:06
By golly I got it! I'll call you later ;-)

Also, I have trouble wrapping my head around those pushers to correct the day and the date...

 By: jack johnson : October 24th, 2019-06:08
I feel a strong rejection aesthetically.

Great review

 By: loccp-1 : October 24th, 2019-06:18
Thanks for the review Looks differently from those leak photos Anyway the bracelet looks a bit wide, but can’t do justice at the moment Will wait to see it in real metal Thanks again!

Thank you for the Details. One or two questions:

 By: nafetS : October 24th, 2019-06:21
- Is the Odysseus a watch or is it a watch Family (such as Saxonia, 1815, lange 1,...), the "Odysseus datomatic" being the First and possibly leading to other Odysseus watches with different complications? - Did ALS mention something, whether there will b...

Family - Odysseus; Model - Datomatic

 By: colton_d : October 24th, 2019-09:41
Yes more dial options coming, and yes more complications/novelties coming to the odysseus family.

Thx, 2 more reasons to relax and watch the hype train from the deck chair.

 By: nafetS : October 24th, 2019-10:58
Let‘s wait and see which models are coming next.

Agreed

 By: colton_d : October 24th, 2019-11:48
I've never been a first-mover, and think the best may be yet to come. There is definite promise here!

We will see... [nt]

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:51

Yes Family. But i don't have any clue about its future members except...

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:50
that the bracelet is designed in a way that some future models will use straps.

You’re fast Fx...aren’t you !

 By: mahesh : October 24th, 2019-06:28
Movements from ALS are never a doubt...gorgeous they’re!! I’m 50:50 on the dial side

I am sorry..

 By: yming : October 24th, 2019-06:35
Lange should stick to dress watches.. The case design is basically same as all other langes except this one has cushion edges on one side.. The day-date windows are really kinda eye soring in my opinion oh man 🤦🏻‍♂️

You don't have to feel sorry... I'm not the designer...

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:52
But no, I don't agree: Lange should NOT stick to dress watches. A brand has to move. Fx

1

 By: mahesh : October 24th, 2019-13:59
I agree, brands need to explore/ expand to new landscapes

Thank you for the impressive work you’ve done.

 By: Tyo : October 24th, 2019-06:38
To speak about the watch. I think I like every single piece or part but I don’t appreciate the mix of all. The bracelet is way too large, I don’t like the overall impression between the bracelet and the case. The dial is cool, but the guichet for the date...

Thank you very much Fr Xavier for this outstanding review and pictures, great job.

 By: Bobbe : October 24th, 2019-07:06
I need another look - or two - for this watch too really appreciate this watch. Just this week I received the 25 year ALS-catalogue. And I saw lot of very beautiful watch is indeed another road. But like you said, maybe it needs some time to like it, or ...

A really nice looking watch

 By: mjv : October 24th, 2019-07:12
I agree with the list of pros: I really enjoy the aesthetic of the watch. I've grown accustomed to something's on steal sport watches that are missing here, I think, my list of cons would include: 1) Not regulated in 6 positions with a better than COSC ga...

I removed the cons about the power reserve in my review.

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-13:55
Because in the end I prefer 50 hours with a well set movement than a larger power reserve and a lack of accuracy. But I understand your point since I wrote it before removing it. Fx

Not impressed to be honest

 By: benlee338 : October 24th, 2019-07:19
Dial looks good, but the bracelet... even if it's nicely finished, it reminds me of bracelet from much cheaper brands. No originality and design thoughtfulness to it. Sorry... P/S : Ironically, I think the watch will look much better on a leather or rubbe...

Bracelet too wide? It look quite tapered to me

Thanks for the review ...

 By: Chromatic Fugue : October 24th, 2019-08:05
Alas I am underwhelmed; I can’t get past the unattractive bracelet, and it would defeat the point of a watch like this to wear it without the bracelet.

+1 [nt]

 By: jack johnson : October 24th, 2019-08:30

Thanks for the review

By: Jari from Finland : October 24th, 2019-08:15
It was versatile and gave a good information of the watch. It seems that also Lange started manufacturing steel watches, that is current trend as to comes popularity of the sport watches.

Winding crown is way too small.

 By: Signo : October 24th, 2019-08:20
Not proportional to the case at all.

Bracelet looks like from the JLC Master series and the clasp looks like it is also used by Glashütte and IWC.

It's a very generic deisgn for a new collection..I am very disappointed...

I hope this is just a prototype and they fix this.

 By: TCE : October 24th, 2019-08:53
but I agree with whomever said th bracelet is too wide doesn't fit. MHO ...

I was thinking the same, why not a perfect fit to the case and lugs?

 By: 1WatchMan : October 26th, 2019-10:25
I cannot understand, anyone has an official explanation?

First things first - THANK YOU Fx!! Nobody on the net covers this brand like you. NOBODY. Bravo!!!

 By: MichaelC : October 24th, 2019-09:04
Now the watch. Maybe I can offer perspective as a high end watch enthusiast who has never owned a AL&S timepiece. I think it is visually exciting, well priced and highly appealing. I could see spending for this sort of watch. I applaud the brand for m...

+1. Well said, Michael.

 By: Pretty Boy : October 24th, 2019-09:43
I fully agree. I can see me wearing this watch. I’m pretty sure that in real life it even looks better than on photos.

Well priced?

 By: FlyingSnoopy : October 24th, 2019-22:26
I would not really say that. It is rather on the high side... Mind you, I do not say that it should have a lower price.. I agree with you that it offers perspective Cheers

Good question. Didn‘t come to my mind so far.

 By: nafetS : October 24th, 2019-09:18
Of course, it supposed to be some sort of crown guard i guess, so it‘s one-sided. But iI would also be interested in seeing, how it would look like with something similar on the other side.

OK, I've seen a Video now showing the pushers.

 By: nafetS : October 25th, 2019-05:14
Would still be Interesting to See it with symmetry. Not saying it should be Like that.

These are two pushers for quick setting of day and date.

 By: Pretty Boy : October 24th, 2019-09:45
They might disappear on new iterations of the Odysseus in the future.

Asymmetry, albeit at dial level, is one of Lange’s typical characteristics.

 By: Boron : October 24th, 2019-14:46
Not sure I see the need to endow the case with surplus bits of metal that serve no function. Doesn’t seem to be an issue on the likes fo the 15710 or the ROOCs, so why should it on the Odysseus?

Looks cheap.

 By: Catulle : October 24th, 2019-09:21
It looks like so many other watches that try to look like other watches. Lange, please don’t lose the way.

+1 [nt]

 By: jim_94104 : October 24th, 2019-10:20

Thanks for that great review. This watch is not for me ...

 By: donizetti : October 24th, 2019-09:44
... but neither is it the fall from grace I feared it would be. So all in all I am relieved that my appreciation of the brand is undiminished. Best Andreas

That is definitely a good effort from ALS. [nt]

 By: jlux : October 24th, 2019-09:50
But +- 50% more expensive than a VC Overseas ??

It has way more complicated features relating to the movement.

 By: Reuven Malter : October 24th, 2019-10:44
Yet nobody really needs them. I agree!

Disappointed.

 By: Dmitriy : October 24th, 2019-09:52
Probably the Odysseus model really raises the bar among luxury sports watches, but I see the design in the dial from JLC (Polaris), the bracelet is a symbiosis of JLC and GO. The decor mechanism is inferior to Breguet 777, AP 4302, PP 26-330, VC 5100 ... ...

So you’ve seen the L155.1 up close and personal, in order to arrive at that conclusion?

 By: Boron : October 24th, 2019-14:50
In which specific area(s) is it lacking compared to those mentioned?

Look at the Breguet 777 caliber platine (Breguet Marine 5517) and A.Lange L155.1.

 By: Dmitriy : October 25th, 2019-01:52
(Photo Breguet 777 by Naked Watchmaker) To some this is not essential, but the A.Lange factory itself has many calibers with perlage on the platine. I don’t think it’s a factory saving. I suppose that by doing so the factory divides the calibers into the ...

That’s one way of looking at it, but my own personal view is that it’s a aesthetic design decision.

 By: Boron : October 25th, 2019-03:19
I wouldn’t agree with the notion that Lange is using this as some sort of movement level differentiator, especially since it’s policy to not finish movements any differently depending on the price point the watch is destined to occupy.

Thanks Fab! [nt]

Brilliant comprehensive review

of an average looking watch in my opinion. I wish Lange would focus on what it does best - dress watches and chronographs!

Thanks for the review

I would suggest strap models/options

Thanks for the great review Fx

Daymatic blue is white gold, Jocke

Fantastic Review...

 By: SALMANPK : October 24th, 2019-10:50
Thank you so much, it was great, the watch looks very well made, need to see it in real life, I think different dial colors will change many opinions. Especially in Black and Silver Grey. S

Two explanations:

 By: Chromatic Fugue : October 24th, 2019-11:10
(1) it has the trappings of a maritime watch; or (2) the design is lost and a bit at sea. : )

That's a funny remark

 By: Mostel : October 31st, 2019-13:24
'at sea' chuckle...

Yes...

Merci beaucoup, FX!

You are by far the person I like to read best on the topic of A.L&S, which contributed to my acquisition of a 1815 Auf/Ab. There is a lot to like about this Odysseus: - the dial (both the layout and the color) and hands - the movement - the asymmetric...

Thanks a lot for your detailed point of view Boris.

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-14:39
It is difficult to explain. I know that I much prefer a lot of bracelets... but this one was working fine when I put the watch on the wrist. Fx

I think I know the bracelet I would have liked on this

 By: Boris : October 24th, 2019-21:22
The bracelet IWC was making for the Fliegerchronograph 3706 and the UTC - the first version of it, which incidentally had the same link removal mechanism. I do like the clasp and its adjustment mechanism, though, something the IWC bracelet was missing.

I quite like it, and I’m guessing that in the wrist it will feel absolutely awesome.

 By: descartes1 : October 24th, 2019-11:27
That said, I would have preferred to see a 12 o’clock date aperture.

What a splendid review!

 By: Ouroboros : October 24th, 2019-11:28
Your review is one of my absolute favourite reviews of this timepiece along with this article from Wristreview. Do you have any idea about what material the majority of the rotor is made of?

correct... [nt]

Could you please compare these pieces shortly? Edit: other than that the ALS seems to wear smaller.. Thank you for the amazing review!

Yes...

 By: foversta : October 24th, 2019-14:43
Yes, the ALS wears smaller. But on the other hand, it looks more subtle and more sophisticated than the Overseas. But the Overseas has a great asset: the easy change of strap system. Thanks! Fx

Thank you very much! [nt]

 By: Reuven Malter : October 24th, 2019-14:45

VC new overseas still my favorite among the modern competitors to the original Genta sports watches

 By: drphileasfogg : October 24th, 2019-23:37
Second place, will be the new Chopard Alpine. Yet here is another blue dial steel watch, it is getting frustrating and I wished ALS would have done something else. Not for me.

Agree. [nt]

Abit disappointed with this launch. ALS had the opportunity to create something truly groundbreaking or at least stylish. Instead they opted for a rather boring timepiece.

Thank you so much Foversta

Now to the watch... I have fewer nice things to say. It looks like a watch that has the quintessential Lange design ethos. Nice open dial, big date, large Lange luminous hands, and a small seconds sub dial with a traditional Lange look. Even the Lugs seem...

I like the dial and case design - though I’m still not sure of my feelings of the pushers for the date and day. The finishing of the dial and movement is superb as with all Lange’s, though I wish they had not removed the polished cap from the movement. Th...

Your photos are the best I've seen, FX. Thanks for them!

I'd guess Lange will modify the bracelet in later versions of this watch to make it more integrated with the case, based upon the feedback.

amazing review as always, thanks!

I really enjoyed reading it and your pictures are outstanding as always. Polarizing release to say the least, it has opinions circulating like mad and probably for good reason as it is not something expected nor easily digested. For what it is worth here ...

Excellent review...

The watch seems quite interesting but, to be fair, it has to be seen in metal.. I do like the idea of adjusting the bracelet by yourself without screws... Thank you again Cheers

Honestly, it could have been worse. The dial is well balanced, with its day date guichets, the texture of the dial is interesting, I like the big " small seconds ". But...

It doesn't really sing to me. The bracelet is something I strongly dislike ( but I am not a bracelet guy ) and most importantly, I am not fan at all of the big rotor in a Lange watch. Ok, I know, it is a so called sports watch, but still... A Lange with a...

Great review. Sadly I wont be knocking on the door for one

Think I wait for my 5711R that I ordered this week

another comment: as L&S had chosen

to not use the classical 3 letters for the Day, they could have a separation between the 2 Day letters and then be more symetrical with the date. Chopard used a special steel metal (scratchless) : "new steel alloy called Lucent Steel A223 . It has the qua...

Thank you Foversta for the VERY detailed review.

I have already put an order in for one with my boutique! I hate all the naysayers, not liking the watch (without even seeing it) is one thing but all the complaining, ESPECIALLY COMPARING IT NEGATIVELY TO THE CODE 11.59, WHICH I LIKE AND OWN the perpetual...

My mind changed a bit looking at the videos at youtube

 By: Thomahof : October 25th, 2019-00:49
It has a lot of wrist presence, and looks beautifully sporty on the wrist. You won't regret putting an order down in my humble opinion! Thomas

I very much agree that a new Lange model needs to be seen and worn in person.

 By: CR : October 25th, 2019-06:20
Like you, I'm reserving judgment until I have a chance to put it on my wrist. That's based upon experience with Lange: My opinions of various Lange models have changed radically, more than once, upon seeing them in person. That being said, I'm still very,...

I might be in the minority

But I actually like the Code... I would prefer if the hands were a bit thicker but the the case and the glass are magnificent Enjoy yours

Thank you for the review.

I cannot wait to see it in the metal. I have a feeling that it will look better on the wrist than in the pictures. I really like the dial with its big windows. A modern yet very Lange take. The case is reasonably sized but I would have liked to have a bro...

Thank you Fx for the detailed review !

About the watch : Lange case with Gronefeld dial , OK overall , but the bracelet is a total disaster... Put it on an Oysterflex a la Daytona and I’m in . This is the watch you pick up two years down the road at a serious discount... For this price, I have...

All good: a strong, very strong watch

Clearly a Lange design, bracelet included. Thank you for tue review!

Over all the watch appealing to me. Nice detail execution.

However, it strongly reminds me of this: and that is a problem... It just doesn't feel like a novelty... And certainly, being 5 times cheaper as well as being on the radar from the "beginning of times, Rolex" IMHO is unquestionably a winner. JK ...

Yes, I'd rather take this Rolex. [nt]

No message body

I tried it on today in the Boutique

The grained dial is quite nice, and the day/date not as obtrusive as I had thought. The bracelet though is far too wide as many have said, and it is a major letdown for me. A strap might save this one though!

Very sad...

A first from Lange. The first ugly Lange in history. Bracelet is hideous, cheapens the watch and don’t get me started on the big ugly Day/Date indicators...

Mmm tough crowd...I will reserve final judgement until I handle this.

Initially I was surprised and a little shocked to see a steel ALS Sports watch or perhaps better described as a less than a dress watch. I didn't think that was what ALS was about. Then I got to thinking about the Zeitwerk, which to me isn't a classic ALS...

Very well said Tim [nt]

Having handled this watch a fair amount I will say that I LOVE it!

 By: DarrenKats : October 25th, 2019-15:34
It was not what I was expecting when I first laid eyes on it in the metal, but it didn't take long to see the Lange DNA all over it. Many of the things that I feel are being nit picked in the close up photos, like the pushers, are quite subtle in person. ...

A very tough crowd.

Made me think about the response to the VC Fifty Six, AP Code1159 and most recently the Chopard Alpine Eagle - what a fickle bunch we are - haha. It’s good to see Lange enter this market segment and I will personally reserve judgement until I see it in th...

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of this watch...

 By: logan2z : October 25th, 2019-18:27
Besides the bracelet and one-eared case (an odd design choice to be sure), my bigger disappointment is that, for nearly $30K, Lange cannot seem to build a big date complication that puts the two date disks in the same plane - and then they put an unsightl...

Thanks Fx, fantastic review and great pictures 👌🏻

I have contradictory thoughts, I love some features and don't like some details. The watch looks very nice on your wrist. I guess it's a watch to be worn, not a watch to be simply "admired". I want to see it in the flesh, not crazy about it but who knows,...

I actually like it

Need to see it in reality but I somehow like what I see

The consensus seems to be a "nay" on this new ALS...

 By: YpJ : October 26th, 2019-12:05
...however, I can't help but to think that will change after some time has passed. From a sheer aesthetic standpoint, it offers an interesting combination of features (grand Day/Date on a 40mm watch, multiple finishes on a tasteful blue dial, symmetry, mi...

Thanks for the article!

I don’t like this watch at all

 By: Mr.Gatsby : October 28th, 2019-10:58
The aesthetics is mediocre, mediocre, mediocre at best. I can’t decide if it’s a dress watch on bracelet or a sports watch. The bracelet looks too refined. It’s nothing like Rolex AP or PP. This is seriously a no go for me, just like many other brands tha...

Could be one that I would like to wear - in fact very much

 By: ammerix1 : October 31st, 2019-12:29
except for some misgivings -- not about the bracelet, which many on other sites find "hideous" -- not me! but about the date typography, especially the serifs on the date-of-the week, which are surely there to emphasize the Lange tradition. The week-date ...

Hi Amerix

By: COUNT DE MONET : October 31st, 2019-13:21
I also noticed that the week day is slightly bigger than the date figure(s). A more symetrical look would have been better but still: I think this watch is a triumph! The offered complications are very useful, for the exact reasons you have mentioned. Fur...

Don't like

 By: Mostel : October 31st, 2019-13:16
But will keep an open mind. While some sport watches DO have day and date... this one makes them both HUGE SERIOUS complications, which are UNsportwatch-like... emotionally, it's cold, like Lange did not understand the 'adventurous-feeling' of Sport... bu...

I think it is the "sportiest" one of the whole lot

Nautilus, Overseas and Royal Oak in particular are way too thin to give them any heft on the wrist. In my book the named three are full steel dress watches. The Odyssesus is 11 mm thick and one can tell by the pictures that it wil have some weight on the ...
