It happens…

Sorry to hear about the accident. I’ve hit the Datograph on door knobs and countertops resulting in big gouges and scratches. When I finally sent it in for service because of a mainspring issue I had them refinish the case. They filled all of the negative spaces perfectly, like brand new.

In regard to the deployant buckle, I feel like it’s a must have, it balances the watch on the wrist nicely vs the tang buckle. I also found getting a custom short strap and flipping the ends of the strap is important to get a good balance. It’s hard to believe it costs 8K now but IMHO still worth it!

Started the year off by dropping my Datograph.....

 By: rawr : January 1st, 2024-11:21
I was trying to put on my Datograph and I lost grip of one end of the strap, leading to the watch being flung outwards and onto the floor... ended up with an easily noticeable chip on the caseback, I'm so sad now At least I was planning to take this watch...

Rest of the case is perfect, which will make the extra cost for case polishing sting more 🥲

 By: rawr : January 1st, 2024-12:16
But I suffer from the usual perfectionist ocd thing and this ding is gonna bother me constantly, so I'm going to get it fixed

I didn’t realize a platinum case could chip off that way, as opposed to ceramic.🤔

But it’s ’better’ that it’s on the case back, although I understand the frustration.

Sorry to hear this.

For what it’s worth I’m not a fan of deployants - period. I much prefer tang buckles as I find the deployants add bulk to the strap fit and if they are single deployants - as Langes tend to be - require the strap set to be fitted backwards from most peopl...

Yeah I want to make sure it won't be uncomfortable

I'm planning to visit the nyc boutique to drop off the watch and hopefully try on a watch with deployant before I decide. At least it will better prevent me from dropping my watch while putting it on 😭

Good idea.

I have had good success with the NY boutique over the past 10 years - they handled the servicing of a Saxonia Annual Calendar with a sticky rotor on the Sax-o-Mat movement about 8 years ago and more recently were most welcoming in their new location with ...

Take the watch on and off

Over something soft like a bed or couch in the future. That way, even if it slips out of your hand, there will be no damage. That’s what I do. That is a beautiful watch but that ding in the back wouldn’t bother me enough to take it in for a service unless...

Agree 💯 👍🏻

Sorry to hear that...

 By: Goh : January 1st, 2024-12:54
but as Nicolas said, it doesn't look bad, especially since the rest of the case is unhurt. As for folding buckles, I am a big fan of them. While very well made (Lange older version), these will never be worth the money they are asking for... However it is...

I remember …

Leaving my Rolex OP 36mm with yellow dial on folded face towel in an open shelf. I’ve totally missed noticing it before I started to flip out the towel. The watch flew and crashed onto my bathroom floor which had a rough surface. Hated every single second...

Happy New Year nonetheless. The ding should be fixable

with laser welding.

Yes it's relieving to know that Lange can fix this back to looking new

 By: rawr : January 1st, 2024-14:31
Too bad their servicing costs are through the sky

Correct!

 By: Speedie74 aka Mr. Torquise : January 1st, 2024-14:44
That is the way Lange works: if there is a chip, than the polishing doesn't help and it is meaningless, at least by precious metal watches. You won't notice a difference after the laser welding!

Buy a rug, not a deployant

 By: cazalea : January 1st, 2024-14:40
I have had them come apart too, though the watch mostly dangles around on your arm, inside your shirt sleeve. Straps can also come apart at the spring bar end — nothing is perfect when people are involved. I’ve seen watches in boutiques dropped on the cou...

All those techs came out

After your friend dropped his watch on the floor?! He must be a VIP! 😆

Very sorry to hear this.

About the case damage: The Lange watchmakers at the NYC boutique may be able to fix this without sending it to Germany. I was told last month that they are trained to laser-weld and refinish Lange cases there. They have the equipment. But I'm sure it depe...

Thank you so much for this photo series Craig!!

I have a single deployant, as it came with my Pt perpetual. I read somewhere that you can use the “same size” straps for tang vs deployant… and that unfortunately not true with me. My issue is that when I ordered my custom JR strap (for deployant), I orde...

This is how short I need the short side on an 1815 when used with a Lange deployant...

 By: CR : January 2nd, 2024-01:07
This is an old custom Lange strap, from back when you could do that. The short side is 48mm. On bigger watches like the Lange 1, the short side needs to be even shorter, like 42mm. ...

Yeah that makes total sense; I don’t know where

 By: Darron : January 2nd, 2024-06:28
I heard that you can use the same length straps for either deployant or tang… while technically true. I don’t think this is ideal.

All of the above.

 By: Anselm : January 2nd, 2024-15:16
I completely agree with what CR wrote. Stop by Jean Rousseau when you’re in NYC. They’re less than 15 minutes by foot from Lange’s boutique. See my notes in this post Hope the sting from the drop wears off soon. And thanks to this thread for reminding me...

Ahh I see… same conclusion that single deployants

 By: Darron : January 3rd, 2024-07:37
Prefer shorter straps and maybe my recollection that you can use the same strap for a tang is for the newer double fold deployant.

Deployants

I am wearing my Dato plat 1st generation with a good quality ss deployant. The deployant totally balances the watch. So comfortable!

This is my "embrace the ding" Dato photo.

But I know many people would remove this obvious blemish. ...

Sorry to hear

I would be devastated too. At least it was close to service time . And from what I’ve read, Lange can bring that chip back to new. I am not a fan of deployant. To big and bulky, adds to the weight and is uncomfortable to me. Tang buckle all the way. I alw...

I wouldn't worry about the ding.

 By: andrea~ : January 1st, 2024-17:35
It's on the case back and it's not even that big. Also I think that spending 8k on a deployant is insanity, but you do you. I feel like tang buckles are more comfortable anyways.

+1 on the buckles.

 By: amanico : January 1st, 2024-17:45

So sorry to hear about this. It would bother me as well. To your point about deployment buckles:

 By: Obeezy : January 1st, 2024-18:10
I have a deployant buckle on my Zeitwerk (white gold). I find with the heavier watches, it helps to balance the weight. Also, I prefer the added security of the deployant (more likely to stay on wrist if it gets undone) and I don’t like the “worn” look on...
