With a tip of my cap to Tony...
This is my 1815 Chronograph with the peerless L.951 caliber inside.
Of the three generations of this watch, I like the current – third – gen the best. This generation began with the white gold Boutique Edition and restored the pulsometer flange to the dial which, to my eye at least, was sorely missed on the second gen model. The first generation is wonderful too, particularly in this same metal / dial combination with its reverse panda dial – I know it’s the favourite of many collectors and my choice of a burgundy OEM strap fondly recalls that idiosyncratic piece.
When the white gold, black dial version of the third gen first came out, it really caught my eye: that combo is simply bad-ass! There were some incredible photos of it at the time, mostly (I noticed) in low light.
As you see, I also went for the black dial - but with the pink gold case. I have to say that I wasn’t as drawn to this combination when it was first released – I preferred the pink gold, argenté dial version that debuted at the same time. Apart from the spectacular (and, I realised, "familiar") blued hands, the argenté dial better shows off the beautiful steps in the dial. Hey, you can’t go wrong with either but both wasn’t an option for me. I already had the argenté dial with the blued hands on my first two 1815s so I got brave and dived headlong into the black dial as the peak of my collection.
Me going with the black dial was also a conscious nod to modern Lange chronograph history: all their chronograph models (Datograph, 1815 Chronograph, Double Split, Triple Split and the Odysseus Chronograph) were first released with black dials.
And this particular combination has really grown on me over my time with it – the secret is that you need to see it in a range of lights. It is simply sensational in the soft light of dusk: the pink gold is extra rosy in such softer light whereupon the black dial deepens and allows the pink gold hands (and the top facings of the pushers) to better stand out. Very hard to capture that light in a photo – well, with my photography skills anyway – so I’ve gone with a daytime photo taken at my desk in the office and a French cuff.
Not subtle, it's a brooding piece with a lot of character and class. Definitely a hitter!
Best regards, aviya.
