. . . gazing at a Mercury Cougar Boss 302 Eliminator on display in the local mall.
That one was a light/medium shade of green. Yours truly was transfixed.
The Cougar of that era was the diametric opposite of the 'Cuda - long and angular vs wide and curvy. Under the hood was a true high-performance mill, the Boss 302 . . .
. . . with huge ports and valves, and loads of power (but not much torque) in the upper rpm ranges. These engines were more commonly fitted to Ford Mustangs, but Mercury also had their fair share. The Cougars were less visible on the street then, and have totally disappeared now. I recall seeing two on the street back when I lived in Huntington Beach, and none since.
As much as I like the Cougar aesthetically, if it came down to a choice between one of Mercury's finest and Plymouth's, it's the 'Cuda all day long.

PS - there were only 469 1970 Cougar Eliminators built with the Boss 302 engine, per Wikipedia, and 169 in 1969. That would explain the scarcity of their sightings.
