Maybe the interest was there in the first place being one of the best known and most important watch the brand ever produced. The interest was therefore there in the first place and it can only improve. The copy watch is riding on that wave of interest.
If you possess or simply like and respect say incunabilis, ie. books printed before the 1.1.1501, it makes little sense reproducing them some 500 years ago. The very fact that the originals date from that time make them that much more interesting. Copies lack that authenticity and that, for me, makes all the difference.
It is interesting noting that some makes, like Rolex, do not make tributes, copies etc. of matches they produced som 60 years ago. That for me makes those original watches that more interesting. Time capsule, not desacralised...
I know I am probably one of the few thinking that way...
