Wrist Scan this week . . .
May 16, 2021,19:09 PM
. . . is complicated.
I really hate issuing tied or multiple awards as there should be a decisive verdict, close as it may be. Please read on with that caveat in mind.
There were several submissions of new watches that are personally compelling. Fillip's KS . . .
. . . Timeout's Voutilainen . . .
. . . Brauner's Nivada (and this shot in particular) . . .
. . . S F's 'instant classic' Speedmaster . . .
. . . Mr Gatsby's Grönefeld . . .
. . . plus similarly MJ23's . . .
. . . Uncle Chico's Breguet . . .
. . . pplater's Ming . . .
. . . KMII's parallel KS . . .
. . . James Dean's Patek in situ . . .
. . . and sc16's VH . . .
. . . all find favor, particularly the KS.
But you guys all know this judge is hopelessly biased towards vintage Omega. And this week, there were enough submissions to drive me crazy. Imagine my pleasure seeing 198402's time-traveler 2998 . . .
. . . Hans' white 2990 . . .
. . . h's 2914 . . .
. . . and The Captain's Apollo-Soyuz.
Now, if I were judging solely on purely subjective content, it would be no contest: 198402 would walk off with this week's honors. An unmolested 2998 is not only a thing of beauty, it's a survivor.
But . . . there were three other photos that were even more compelling. When it comes to composition, Abel . . .
. . . took my breath away with this shot of his Sub set against the Hard Rock in Orlando. The ubiquitous framed by the surreal - what a composition! Good for third place this week.
How do you top a surreal background? Try an aircraft carrier.
Second goes to Fred for having the presence of mind to take a pic of his SM300 when all he was thinking about were his surroundings. (Watchco, right, Fred?)
I have to award the Blue Ribbon this week, though, to Dave G.
The 1921 isn't a watch that normally comes to mind; I think it's fair to say they're an acquired taste. I've seen them before in the metal, but have never tried one on. Dave's photo fostered an appreciation for the design that I didn't have until just now. For that, I thank him. Exquisite watch, naturally framed . . . and utterly compelling.
Thanks to all for participating this week, and hope to see you next weekend for the latest installment of Wrist Scan.
