My last stint as judge . . .

. . . was a piece of cake.  Not so this week.  The primary consideration for Watch of the Week is the watch that intrigues most; it's not a beauty contest, per se, nor is it narrowly focused on horological merit.  The decision is supposed to reflect our preferences.  Given K's theme, there were three that stood out from a personal perspective.

First was Tegis' Zenith pocket watch.

My grandfather Artin bought a Zenith pocket watch on the occasion of the birth of his first son, my Uncle George, in 1927.  You will better appreciate how significant this acquisition was because, first, his father was a watch merchant whose primary supplier was Zenith (this was around the turn of the last century).  My grandfather was well acquainted with Zenith pocket watches, and chose one to commemorate the start of his family.
And second, he was not well off by any stretch of imagination, so the purchase must have set him back a few months of income, if not more - not to mention my grandmother's wrath.

Then, there's j's Titus.

There couldn't be a humbler watch.  It's precisely on that account I found it compelling, given that it was gifted no less than four times within his family.  Truly, an heirloom.

If you're reading this, j, I hope it ends up on your daughter's wrist next.

;-)

Finally, there's Zabreg's masterpiece.

No, not that masterpiece.  This one.

As I've written more than a few times: if there is such a beast as a universal watch that satisfies most requirements most of the time, it's the Overseas.  It just so happens that I was gifted one of the first production models of the second generation some fourteen years ago*, and after a few months of proud ownership, decided to gift it to Dad.  A few months later, he decided to gift it back.  I then let it go, a bit disappointed he couldn't find time between his two Seikos for the VC.

That Zabreg's Mom bought it for him makes it endearingly special; that I've met her makes it poignantly special.

WotW honors to Zabreg in a three-way dead heat.  Give Mom credit for the edge ;-) . . .
