A quick look on the net tells us that Moissanite (named after the man who first discovered it in 1893, Henri Moissan) is a crystaline form of silicon carbide.
I see no reason why it couldn't be used as a watch glass as the optical properties seem to be good too.
Who knows, maybe the price?
Do you know a supplier for the material in watch glass form?  I see only cut jewels.
