Why Alligator...?
This may seem like a silly question and if so please excuse my ignorance but I've been wondering why the vast majority of "high end" manufacturers invariably fit their non-bracelet style watches with an alligator strap.
Is this strictly out of tradition or is there some unwritten rule regarding this?

Not necessary alligator, it can be crocodile.
Porosus specis (croco) arguably has the best quality leather strap. Regards Ling
