This may seem like a silly question and if so please excuse my ignorance but I've been wondering why the vast majority of "high end" manufacturers invariably fit their non-bracelet style watches with an alligator strap.
Is this strictly out of tradition or is there some unwritten rule regarding this?
Which material is more durable than crocodile or alligator with comfort in mind and a natural look i think durability is one of the key reasons but also the natural look and feel is also very important as there are other materials such as python, cow, stingray, frog, only snake has nice movement like alligator but not as durable anyway this is MO hope this helps.

Alligator leather straps can resist wear and tear better. If you notice belt made of cow hide or other leather materials they twist or curve when used often and are not anymore straight as a brand new one. But if it is made of alligator it is far better. Hope this help! Cost has nothing to do with it. Alligator belts are more expensive! Better quality!
Although there seem to be several arguments for the use of crocodile / aligator as a material for a watch strap and although I think they're quite handsome with many watches, I also feel they appear inapropriate on some dress watches as they sometimes tend to overpower a really clean and elegant watch. Again, it really does seem to come down to the owners own sensibilities.
