Some thoughts

Dean and Justin: I think there are a good number of 1003 watches out there to be had, but often they seem to have not aged well, at least relative to the larger caliber watches. Part of the problem is that their relatively small size means that they aren't worn much for fashion reasons. With the snap back cases, gaskets have aged and water resistance has been lost, meaning that moisture has entered and with a lack of service to arrest any problems, dials have spotted and movement parts have oxidized.

And too many have been serviced by watchmakers not accustomed to the extreme small size of the movement, meaning they have butchered them.
