Final Summary
Now I'm quite convinced about the ref, it's most certainly a
Vacheron & Constantin ref 2050 along with the famous automatic caliber K1121.
Shown also below some of the modern derivatives of cal 1120 - still in use with some of the most attractive VC refs available today.

Had COMPLETELY forgotten that the question has been asked before! Now feeling just a little bit ...stupid. Still: it is genuinely a good friend's watch, so (sadly!) his keeper. He will never part with his father's watch, but it is nice to be able to help ...
