Adding my Rough Guess..

This is not intended to be an authenticity check, it's just a first rough guess.

Made and sold in early to mid 1970's, definitely not late 1960's - my guess: 1975.

For the ref, a difficult to answer question - my best guess, a follower or derivative of ref 2040, but there are many similar looking case designs at that time.

The Vacheron Constantin automatic movement is probably a K1121, with Geneva Hallmark, 36 jewels, segment 21K gold rotor. It is based on a JLC ébauche, but refined and regulated to the much higher standards of Vacheron Constantin - the Haute Horlogerie Maison standards, not the much more basic JLC standards of higher volume manufacturing.

The movement is perceived as the most collectible automatic movements of that time, the stuff the aficionado is recommended to look for.

For further readings about the K1120 movement check: Link

The structured / textured dial is from the second modern revival of texture style's in the 1970's.

This watch was originally most probably not accompanied by a gold bracelet. At that time you could observe the integrated gold bracelet very often (what gives an impressive wrist appearance).

The recommendation for the aficionado:

This ref is a good sample what to look for if thinking about the Vacheron Constantin watches from the 70's - much under-appreciated at the moment.

Last recommendation for the owner: This watch looks dirty, therefor I would suggest to give her the full watch service by dedicated professionals (or better V&C).
In the case-back you will find the ref number. For exact details you can contact V&C via email, but you have to provide the movement and case number, but do not open the watch yourself.

Anyone able to help?...

VC experts: your assistance would be much appreciated. The photos which follow show the watch which a good friend inherited from his father (and no: this is not another scam story from a one-post newbie fishing for tips to improve his counterfeit pieces!)...

I suspect seen how thin the watch is

that it has a 1120 movement- or at least from that family. It was 3.05 mm high with date. Like a lot of movements back then coming originally from JLC. Also used by Patek and others. That would also tie in with the design of the watch which screams mid 70...

Thanks Dirk!... [nt]

Thank you also, Timeset...

That is a very thorough, and very helpful, response. The comments about the bracelet were just a little confusing though: why do you think it was probably not on bracelet originally, if (on the other hand) at that time you could observe the integrated bra...

Of course; you are right...

(pictures did not load first time around). Thank you again for taking that trouble. Cheers, pplater.

Maybe a Vacheron Constantin ref 2051 or at least close by that ref

The watch above with the ident dial to yours is a ref 2051, like that below. ...

You asked this question already six years ago..

I did remember: Stay with it, don't give it away! It's a beauty.

Wow!!! You are right!...

Had COMPLETELY forgotten that the question has been asked before! Now feeling just a little bit ...stupid. Still: it is genuinely a good friend's watch, so (sadly!) his keeper. He will never part with his father's watch, but it is nice to be able to help ...

you are not stupid

I'm stupid because I do not remember your question instantly, just remeber it after writing down that above.

Final Summary

 By: anon438 : April 19th, 2019-00:23
Now I'm quite convinced about the ref, it's most certainly a Vacheron & Constantin ref 2050 along with the famous automatic caliber K1121. Shown also below some of the modern derivatives of cal 1120 - still in use with some of the most attractive VC refs ...

Thank you again, timeset...

...

Why do I think those ref's are underrated today?

 By: anon438 : April 19th, 2019-01:03
If you look for the most simple slim automatic movement (cal 1120 ...) in the VC portfolio you would discover the Traditionnelle at 30 K. Therefore my estimate for a good used sample would be roughly 25 - 50% of that value (7,5 -15 K), higher only for spe...
