Hi J

This will test my memory since I'm not wearing the piece today.

Essentially the Earth disc is always set to GMT, local time is set by the hands (which are on concentric rings). I'm in the UK so currently local and GMT time are the same. The sun is the symbol at 12 o'clock on the bezel and is fixed. The moon is the circle which is shaded 50/50 silver and blue, this rotates around the earth and also rotates on itself to actually always show the correct illumination of the moon by the sun from any point that can view it on the earth - so you can look at the cloisonné dial, see where you are and as the earth rotates you will see on the dial and in the actual sky the moon come into view, then cross the night sky and disappear. The Dragon hand (Head of the dragon hand is the green triangle and there is a tail on the opposite side) is used to show when the moon, sun and Earth are aligned for an eclipse. Moon and head/tail of dragon hand at 6 o'clock is a lunar eclipse - moon and head/tail of dragon hand at 12 o'clock is a solar eclipse. If you bear in mind that the sun is fixed at 12, a moon at 12 is sitting between the earth and the sun, this is a new moon which is when a solar eclipse could occur with the moon casting a shadow on the earth - the reverse is true when the moon is at 6 o'clock, this is a full moon and is the opportunity for the earth to get between the sun and the moon giving a lunar eclipse (which we had overnight).
With regards to the sunrise and sunset (it is easy for me to read since I'm living in the UK using GMT or GMT + 1 time) the dial is showing real time sunrise and sunset occurring along the bent wire - sunrise to the right and sunset to the left - the earth is rotating anticlockwise and anything above the wire is daylight and below the wire is night.
On the photo the current time and GMT time are both showing approx 13.25 - this is shown on the hands and by the 24 hour time around the earth cloisonné earth. So looking at the earth you will see North America is/has come into daylight while night is falling across Pakistan (approx). New York for example being -5 hrs on GMT is showing the sunrise having occurred and Karachi at + 5 going into darkness. To know the times you take a line from the North pole across the wire and out to the GMT ring - simply count the hours around the dial either forwards or backwards subtracting or adding to your local time. So New York has already had a sunrise (- 6 'approx' hours on GMT time) so approx 7.25 am and Karachi is currently going into night + 5 GMT so approx 18.25. Checking the actual times New York sunrise is  7.14 and Karachi sunset is 18.07. I believe the most accurate representation is always inside the line where the equator line meets the wire - of course the cloisonné dials are all hand done and are nothing more than a representation.
Setting is actually easy - the year is set by matching the moon and dragon hand to a supplied chart, month is set by using the outer calendar ring and then the day is set from a base of a  full/new or quarter moons then advancing the number of days away from the moon phase you have chosen (easier than it sounds). The button at 9 o'clock allows you to set the GMT time separate from local time and to allow for daylight saving.
I hope I got that all correct.

Quick description of some of the functions.

Everything is shown in real time so you see the possibility of an approaching eclipse days ahead. Sun is depicted at 12 0’clock. The Earth rotates anti-clockwise once a day, the moon rotates anti-clockwise once a lunar month - 12 o’clock moon is a new moo...

Thank you for this concise description of the function of this marvellous watch.

Everytime I saw it, I tried to understand the indications. Now its a lot clearer to me. Is there a more in-depth explanation in the internet anywhere? Best regards, Jens

There is a superb book written by Marcus Hanke that explains the working of all 3 pieces in the Trilogy of Time.

This is sill available to order from Ulysse Nardin. Here is link to the online pdf of the book.

Questions.....

Hi Russell, I've seen a few pictures of this here without really understanding what I have been looking at and so I had a few questions. The sunrise is 6:50 or so and sunset is 7:55 or so per current indication, is that right? I assume every watch is adju...

I’m not sure I’m understanding everything on first read, I think I need to reread a few more times to get it. Amazing watch.

Russell, this is my most fav. From the Trilogy set.

The Tellurium is just fantastic, and reveals the true genius of Ludwig Oechslin! To conceive this astronomical wristwatch is one of the most amazing feats in all of horological IMO. It still stands the test today, 20 plus years later. Cheers, Tim

This tellurium piece is just...

 By: GLau : January 27th, 2019-08:00
superb and unbelievably complicated ! How could someone even think about conceiving such an astronomical instrument on the wrist ??

What is great to understand is how the Planetarium and Tellurium work together.

Essentially the Earth, moon and sun section of the Planetarium is enlarged for the Tellurium. Between the two you can see the whole solar system relating back to life on earth. 👍
