We out west are spoiled
My grandson is a very picky eater, trying to get him to eat wholesome, delicious food is akin to eating meat with hair on it. It's maddening. I guess I fall in the same category when it comes to eating unknown foods. I have a better chance of eating it if you don't tell me what it is.
There's a psychology behind the inability to eat foods with certain names. If you place food in front of me having the word horse or cat meat in it, chances are I will gag. I'm watching an English series called Poirot about a Belgium detective in the late 1930's. He's mentioned a particular food in several of the episodes by the name of "spotted dick". (I wince.) Usually, it's referred to as a treat but there's always a peculiar look on the faces when it's mentioned. What in the world is "spotted dick?" It sounds like an inside joke or a unique part of the animal served for special occasions. Have you eaten this before? (Yes, I've lived a sheltered life.)
