The bittersweet Merry Christmas of 2020...
We were in Maui in the Spring of 2020 when Covid was shutting down places and Hawaii was essentially closing. We missed the trip in the Fall we usually take but we decided to chance it and go for Christmas. There were a lot of restriction and a lot of closed business and not a lot of tourists.
We had a great time as usual but the other side of the coin was that the people of Hawaii finally had the islands to themselves and it started a rather heated debate that still rages today, there and other places about the amount of "over tourism" which is a factor in quality of life for the people living there.

However, we haven't been back since the catastrophic fires, in part because we felt it would be somehow disrespectful to descend upon an island deep in mourning and recovery. Our first trip back in years is coming up in February, and we're hoping spirits ...
We were back once since the fires, and stayed on both the Kaanapali side and the Wailea side and it did feel different, especially on the Kaanapali/Lahaina side.

all the people who’s livelihood depends on tourism. There are many places in the world that get too many tourists.
It's such a difficult situation for Hawaiians. No real type of industry other than tourism and I get that people get tired of "visitors" all the time.
It's a complex problem. It's like if a person lived anywhere USA, and had to take in borders in order to make their mortgage payments. So on the one hand you need them and on the other hand you get sick of people in your home. But there's no way out. And ...
