I to my first weapon on 26th April 1971
May 01, 2019,07:56 AM
as a birthday present from my dad. It was a Smith & Wesson .357 Mag.
I have hunted for some tens of years. I made the Big Five and hunted round the world and around Africa. From Rocky Mountains to the Alps, From Zimbabwe to Greenland. Because I have "done it all" including the African Professional Hunter's Licence, I do not hunt much anymore. But let's see.
I'm interested to get a bird or two to the pot but clay pigeons are something I enjoy.
Shooting is an activity and very social and that's what I enjoy.
Best, Kari

If watch collecting is crazy, shotguns are on a different level.

The Grail is to acquire an identical pair of sidekick guns. For the situations when one is not enough. Identical mechanism, hand engraving which is as close as possible identical, same weight and balance, wood from the same blank with similar structure. I...
My weakness is the wood.
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-03:10
In a Pair the wood is never identical because they are to different pieces and threaten just with oil. But close enough... Naturally, the density and measurements are identical. Best, Kari ...
I go to H&H next time on 9th May.
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-06:51
Yes, it takes some time. Just the engravings take from the Artist well over 200-300 hours to engrave. And such an engraving is pretty standard. A good piece of wood is costing more than the platinum case of a Patek. And it takes a month to finalise the be...
Some people buy cars and never drive them
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-05:11
even cars are made to be driven. Shotguns are made to be shot. That’s the point of a bespoke gun. Would you buy a bespoke business suit for your collection? Best Kari
Built For You?
By: Steve E : May 1st, 2019-05:47
Did you commission these to be built for you?
These were built for me according to my specifications.
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-06:53
The stocks are fitted for me, the trigger pulls are made according to my requirements, same with the chokes and barrel lengths. I also chose the engraving and hand picked the wood from a good collection. Best, Kari
Absolutely,

Might be dangerous

To use a katana, except maybe to cut rice straw bales. Not much point in using a really nice old one.
Beautiful shotguns

I haven’t got the glue regarding shotguns but I can see the craftsman ship.. I hope is will stick to collecting watches as this hobby of yours can be expensive
The Best London made shotgun cost the same as a basic GC Patek.
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-07:04
The gun is 100% hand made, an unique piece and it takes well over one year to produce. One can enjoy watching a beautiful watch. Shotgun can also be used both in the field as well as in the range. I just ordered a "basic" Best London James Purdey & Sons. ...
Beretta is among the best.
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-07:37
It's a Rolex of shotguns. Even the very cheapest Beretta is at leat a Tudor. I have always enjoyed Beretta and I have several. I shoot a SO5 nowadays a few times every week. Best, Kari
Haha. Thanks, Kari.

Yes, I love my basic SilverPigeon. I’m sure the deeper I dive into the clays, the more the collection of guns will grow. Just out of curiosity, what disciplines do you shoot? (Or do you mainly hunt game?) Cheers

Even Purdey is owned by the same group as Cartier,
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-09:31
normally they are ranked as #1. So I would say that Purdey is like Patek and H&H is like Vacheron Constantin. The comparison is kind of limping: Patek and VC are mostly industrial products while H&H and Purdey are bespoke products and 100% hand made. And ...
Well done. Congratulations.

I don't like to call them shops....but London has the most interesting and wonderful establishments that are worth numerous visits. Purdey, Holland & Holland, John Lobb Ltd, Cleverly and Lock are among the finest. As you have experienced, immersing yo...
That's just how I see it.
By: dr.kol : May 1st, 2019-07:42
I will visit Purdey's "factory" on 10th May. Interesting to see - they have an average output of roughly 1 gu per employee per year. Holland & Holland I will visit the 9th, I have visited their factory earlier. And on 5th June they have a dinner party whi...
