I'm not a huge non-fiction reader...
...but I do enjoy books about the American Civil War. The Killer Angels, by the late Michael Shaara is one of my favorite books of all time. It is remarkably poignant and insightful. I suspect that I feel a connection to that era in American history because I grew up near some of the most famous battle sites of the war, and spent many a summer's day looking for old bullets at Bull Run. One of my most memorable Civil War related adventures was when my college pals and I decided to pay our respects to General Stonewall Jackson's arm, which had to be amputated and was laid to rest in Chancellorsville, Virginia. It's hard not to feel connected to the war when you grow up by Jefferson Davis Hwy. and the local high school is named for Robert E. Lee.

I too like military books and history also. I don't have my large collection any more but I still have my old news papers. Though it's old history, it's still full of adventure, courage, grief and valor. Two of my daughters love history also but my younge...

Is a personal favourite of mine. I think I have about 4 copies of The Naked Island, a couple of Cheshire, VC and a few of his novels. From the American perspective, I rate Paul Fussell highly.
If you enjoyed...

...All the Queen's Men (per one of your photos) then I think you'll appreciate Braddon's other books. The Naked Island is about his experiences as a POW in Malaya. Cheshire VC is a short biography of Leonard Cheshire, the youngest RAF Group Captain, obser...
