Helen,   Never trust a...

Helen,

Never trust a doctor( unless they are forum members
of course).

General practitioners as we call them over here are
on the whole pretty useless. i ruptured my lower disc in my back when i was 18
and lived with it for years with only occasional bouts of pain, but as i said
the other day, my job didnt help with cars and bikes for so many hours every
day, however, no one found out about my disc being totally knackered until a
locum 'cleverly'(i think not) took me off a muscle relaxant. after 9 months
of agony and a walking stick my GP came back from maternity leave and organised
an x-ray and put me back on the meds.

they discovered that my disc was as flexible as a
piece of welsh slate and sent me to the hospital where a 'wonderful' consultant
said he would arrange an operation at a centre of excellence for orthopaedic
surgery and i'd be totally cured. he sent me for an MRI then 6 months later told
me that they wouldnt be operating and denied ever telling me he did( he also
told my wife that there was nothing wrong with our son when he couldnt put any
weight on his heels and to encourage him to walk without crutches. after she
went to ER a Paediatrician diagnosed severs disease which is a disease
that affects the growth plates in childrens bones causing lots of pain. when she
went back to him with our physio he said 'its severs disease, just like i told
you it was last time'. needless to say he has now retired early.)

i persisted by telling him that i may be in pain,
but i'm not an idiot and eventually got an appointment with the surgeon, who
actually said that they try to avoid back ops these days as most people
operated on 10 years ago or even less are worse now than they were then.
his advice was that despite the damage the meds do to your stomach lining and
heart its better than having an op. at least he was open and honest about it and
i respect him for it.

in my experience pain causes mental anxiety and
stress, which then exacerbates the pain etc etc viscious circle, but you've got
got to have the pain to start with which a lot of doctors dont take into
account. i'm not defending them in any way, but a lot of symptoms of neck damage
is headaches and shoulder stiffness which also occur in stress. they have a very
difficult job and in the main do a very good one, but sometimes the likes of you
and i slip through the net.

i hope there is some way that you can get on an
even keel. it doesnt matter if they operate or medicate as long as the pain is
bearable and you can function fairly well.

kind regards

Graham
