TimeOut

Consider the TOTAL package (literally)

The Leica DLux5 versus the Panasonic LX5 debate has its champions on each side. There are many similarities.  There are some differences in aesthetics, functionality and performance which only you can decide are important or not.  It is best to do a side by side comparison in store if you can.

What do you want the camera for? Is the Leica red dot important to you?   Is the Leica badge enough to justify or explain an approximate $300 difference?

Also do not forget how you will be taking photos and what your workflow will be.  Many people just take snaps and share.  Is that you? JPEG is fine in this case.
Will you be shooting RAW format and post processing?  Post processing is a big component of photography nowadays.  If this is you, then consider what software is in the box.

With the Panasonic you get software for a viewer/organiser/editor called Photofun.  Never heard of it before but it must be fun to use.
With the Leica you get Adobe Lightroom.  Lightroom is a professional tool that can cost $200 to buy as a standalone product.  This evens the cost debate a little - something a lot of people forget.  Lightroom is great for organising, storing and editing.  If you will be shooting RAW, then you will want Lightroom.  Factor this into the cost equation.  Of course, if you have software (maybe even Lightroom already) that you already prefer, then this is not so important.

So the equation (to me) is Panasonic versus Leica/Adobe. At retail level the price differenceto the consumer is now about $100.   I return to my previous questions...  What do you want the camera for?  Will you shoot jpeg or raw? Do you want to post process?

I faced those questions last year and chose the Leica DLux 5.

Richard.
