Change

I live in an area of Fairfax county, Virginia, that is turning into the final development frontier for the county. Below is a photo of a nearby 1950's Lutheran church that was just razed.

The main church building

The church was sited on a 1.8 acre lot with some mature hardwood trees and a few outbuildings / homes.

The church lot and apparently a daycare.

Two weeks ago the demo team showed up, and now the church looks like this.

Totally razed. All gone.

I'm not too nostalgic, except it is a little strange to live in an area for over 20 years, and suddenly everywhere you look older stuff is coming down fast. If anything bugs me about it, it's the clear cutting of undeveloped wooded lots.

I used to live in Jefferson Manor off of North Kings Highway.

That's Belle View,

So not far from where you once lived. My first house was in Jefferson Manor. The house is still there, but not me.

Did my undergrad in Fairfax pre Y2K

Has Main street changed much?

I just finished a book on this very subject

Not a book about change, exactly, but documenting the replacement of a church that had been there since about the 1950's. Same era as that Lutheran church. This was originally an Episcopal church. The building was tired and the people in the congregation ...

It seems this congregation had suffered attrition, and that they decided to shut down.

I suspect the redevelopment here will be "unaffordable" housing. I'm not sure I'd call it a silver lining, but the property brought well over $2.5 MM, and the proceeds were donated to local charities. The redeveloped church you showed looks very nice.
