No Hawk Today
After our own personal Memorial Day service, we decided to walk a bit on our old college campus (variously known as Balboa University, Cal Western, USIU, PLC, PLNC, etc.). We were last here in December, where I spun in circles filming a gloriously-cooperative hawk: Here is the LINK to that FILE if you want to see all the photos of the magnificent bird.
What we did find surprised us! After living on campus for 4 years and then my wife working here for 12 more, and us visiting periodically over the last 50 years, we'd never found the corner we investigated today.
This giant canyon is right next to the health center and security guard HQ, two places we both tried to avoid while being students (and faculty). And it's not exactly a "stroll in the park" to get there.

But since today was a school holiday (and graduation was 2 weeks ago), we just parked in the security lot and walked off with confidence, leaving windows down and doors unlocked.
Someone in the office likes bright flowers!

As does the landscaping crew. This is near the campus entrance so gets a bit more care than the rest of the grounds.

This odd building is the campus administration building, a figurehead saved from 100 years ago. More on that later. We went down a sidewalk to the left, which quickly reverted to a dirt path.

which fed us into this impenetrable mass of foliage.

There were a few not-so-well-trodden paths. There's NO cell reception down here, so why would today's college students venture out here?

Could even be dangerous if you came here at night, or after a few beers.

I don't want to speculate, but this looks like a corset to me. Hmm - has it been here since Victorian times? I think not.
we came to some chairs. How convenient, and nicely situated with a modest view.

We took a brief rest, and the remaining adventures will be in part 2. Please come along with us.
