NEW SEIKO 5 Sport Watch line
Seiko sent a press release today announcing the availability of a new line of watches, a fusion of Seiko 5 and Seiko Sports.
The new logo is a stylized S indicating this compression of two historic Seiko lines.

For sake of visibility, I filtered out the backgrounds on the watches (Seiko marketing thoughtfully pointed out that we could turn off background layers using Photoshop), otherwise the images would have looked like this:
SPORTS SRPD51SUITS SRPD76
NOTE: this is a bit like the BBC TV announcement telling us in the near future we can use the app to adjust the volume of music, background sound effects and voice SEPARATELY, in an attempt to assuage the millions of hearing impaired (or just plain annoyed) customers who have complained
"WE CAN'T HEAR THE DIALOGUE OVER ALL THE OTHER CRAP NOISES ON THIS PROGRAM!"
Now, back to the watches.
For over 50 years, Seiko 5 Sports has delivered consistently high levels of reliability, durability, performance and value that have endeared it to lovers of mechanical watches worldwide.
Today, with the creation of a new design and a broad new collection, this much loved timepiece is re-born.
Welcome to the new Seiko 5 Sports, a collection with all the same values but a fresh new look. All will be available in September 2019.
Born in the 60’s. Loved ever since.
The first ever Seiko 5 watch, Seiko Sportmatic 5, was born in 1963. It was Seiko’s and Japan’s first ever automatic day-date watch. ‘’5’’ represented the promise that every Seiko 5 watch would have five key attributes;
1. an automatic movement
2. a day-date display at the three o’clock position
3. water resistance
4. a recessed crown at the four o’clock position
5. a case and bracelet built for durability
Taken together and in combination with the then-new mainspring and shock resistance system, these features gave Seiko 5 its distinctive appearance and its strength.
In 1968, Seiko 5 Sports was born. It was created for the ever-growing number of men and women who wanted a watch they could trust as they played sports. In addition to the fundamental values of Seiko 5, Seiko 5 Sports offered:
6. enhanced water resistance
7. a strengthened crystal
8. luminous hands and hour markers.
The new design. Founded in heritage. Created for the individual.
The new Seiko 5 Sports draws its inspiration from the five decades of Seiko 5 Sports’ success and its design is based on one of Seiko’s most loved sports watches.
Every creation in the new collection shares an updated version of this celebrated case and all have
9. arrow shaped minute hands
10. distinctive hour markers and
11. one-way rotating bezel
12. Seiko’s Caliber 4R36, with 24 jewels, optional manual-winding, a 41 hour power reserve and a hacking second hand.
