Blown away by Grand Seiko

I just don’t get how GS can make such a tremendous watch for such a low price, the zeratsu finishing is outrageous!!! So is the quality of materials used and the sheer amount of engineering put into the design and the movement.
What really got me since I got it has been the dial, this is not my first GS but it’s certainly my favorite, and it’s mostly the mesmerizingly beautiful dial, GS went for a more traditional look here compared to their better known textured dials but the hand lacquer quality makes for a far more precious result. That coupled with the diamond like polished indices and the wonderful ceramic bezel gives you far more pretty per buck than you have any right to ask for.

I am unable to capture the blue dial in pictures, this is one to experience in person, but here is a pic anyway:

I am very pleased to see GS making headway in terms of their design, here is a casual GMT that truly feels unique and in a very Japanese fashion. Kind of reminds me of Lexus sedans somehow.

Also of note is the amount of thought that went into making the watch large at 44mm yet comfortable for all wrist sizes, the curvature of the case sloping inwards makes the watch unobstructive when flexing the wrist.

The bracelet is the weak point of this offering in my opinion, a significant upgrade from previous GS bracelets that borrowed heavily from commercially produced Seikos, but still not at the level of Rolex or Omega, especially the clasp.

Overall I am over the moon with this piece, such a fantastic value and a truly beutifull watch with a great movement. I highly recommend this particular Grand Seiko

The Pepsi has a great bezel

And the history with Pan Am, but the case finishing is really sub par. I hope GS catches on and has a ripple effect among Swiss brands in the same way Lange got them to develop fiber in house chronographs

You're being very generous today afaleh, only sub par and not resembling a tin can and bottom of the barrel.

Yes, I hope Rolex follow GS and make the Pepsi a 44.2 mass of steel with an asymmetrical bezel. Maybe rename it the Grand Pepsi?

:)

I do hope my previous comments did not offend any admirers of the Pepsi, that certainly was not the intent. We all enjoy wrist watches in our own way, and have our own take on them, we are fortunate to have so many to choose from. That said, the GS really...

The bezel illustrates well the difference between Rolex and GS. Rolex would never so strangely compromise...

the display because they couldn’t manufacture a symmetrical bi colour bezel using sapphire. It’s not the 44.2mm by 14.4mm heavy steal case or accuracy only to +8 on the wrist or short two year warranty or strained design coherence. Surface shine is valued...

Not sure what the point is

But it seems I really did rub you the wrong way. In hindsight, these are enthusiast forums and passions run high, I should have considered that before describing the Pepsi so harshly, my apologies to you sir if that upset you. That aside, this particular ...

Yes…interesting..

The GMT market is pretty competitive. Being an Omega guy I went with this one. The specs are very impressive but I wish they had included the military time on the dial as well like your Seiko. ...

I was considering that same Omega

Great watches both, GS edged it out as I wanted to diversify my collection and had too many Omegas, but they both have their strong points.

Even though I already have an SBGE 001 I am really tempted by this watch . I often wonder why some collectors have the several variations of the same model . That said this watch is different enough. It is also a Hi Beat instead of a Spring Drive.

I actually prefer the hi beat

Not sure why but I just haven’t warmed up to SD yet, just prefer all mechanical so far

Hi Beat vs Spring Drive

 By: Boxcar : July 2nd, 2021-02:46
I have two of each if you include my Eichi II . Both have there appeal . I think of the Spring Drive as mostly mechanical . I guess the SD is like buying a car where the computers help the mechanical parts of the car function better ,

Interesting take on SD

I have not delved too deeply into it, definitely worth considering when it comes in a package as nice as the Eichi II. Wow that’s a nice watch, would love to see some pics and hear your take on it after ownership please

Interesting Take

I have posted some photos before but I will take some new ones soon. I feel very fortunate to have one . It required me to get rid of a couple very nice watches that I did not wear often. It is not a watch with an complications but the finishing is superb...

Me as well…

One of the reasons I own a mechanical anti magnetic is reliability ie…no electronic components. I dislike the way it looks as well…they do a good job of hiding the electronics but…uggh.

I love this watch but

IMO it could be improved with a “click” bezel that doesn’t spin freely. Except of this it is top

Fully agree on that point

 By: afaleh : July 1st, 2021-19:11
The Willy Nilly bezel is one area in addition to the bracelet that could have improved

My understanding is

Actual AM/PM indication

AM/PM is at 6:00 and 18:00 but depending on the month it can vary by a few minutes on either side. So, no, not actual am/pm.

"On a standard meridian at the equator one might expect the Sun to rise at 6:00 A.M. and set at 6:00 P.M., but the Sun rises at 6:03 A.M. in July, a summer month, and also rises late, at 6:11 A.M. in February, a winter month. It rises seven minutes before...

I don’t see where the design flaw is

 By: afaleh : July 2nd, 2021-15:44
It seems like you are assuming all manufacturers will have to go to the same length Rolex did in manufacturing the Batman and Pepsi bezels? I wouldn’t consider that a design flaw in the same fashion I don’t mind a date display at 4, doesn’t have to be a b...

Did you write this before reading my reply to your "my understanding is Actual AM/PM".

My friend, there is a reason every GMT bi coloured bezel is symmetrical to 6:00 and 18:00.

I did

 By: afaleh : July 2nd, 2021-16:27
But that doesn’t change my view, the purpose of the bicolor bezel is to indicate which side is AM and which is PM. That is accomplished. All bi colored bezels are approximate to some degree, the GS more so. I see the illuminated asymmetrical bezel as a de...

My good sir, the bezel does not indicate which side is am or pm lol. The day does not start at 6:30 and end at 17:30 lol

 By: oyster case : July 2nd, 2021-16:44
Equation of time effects occur on both sides of the distribution therefore 6:00 and 18:00 is entirely legitimate, accurate and why it has been universally adopted.

Value is the keyword here

Truly amazing finishing at this price segment

Agreed!
