Probably the most hated and most misunderstood model in the modern Rolex sports model collection.
Nevertheless, with its bezel-controlled programmable mechanical timer equipped with a mechanical memory and on-the-fly synchronization to the nearest minute, it was one of THE most innovative chronographs in the market.
After ~17 years in the catalog and ~2 updates it is finally dead.

MODERATOR EDIT: To add some context, this is how yacht racing works. Yachts continuously move - they don't stay still. So, unlike a horse race where horses wait behind the start line, yachts are continuously moving and are timing themselves to cross the start line at exactly the start of the race. The start line, a line between two buoys, does not move. Yachts circle the start line until the "starting gun" goes off, signaling the start of the race. Now, it's critical that the yacht be just behind the start line when the gun goes off. If even a tiny portion of the boat is over the start line when the race starts, the yacht has to circle around again since the entire boat needs to be behind the start line when the race starts. This would take precious time and result in a lower chance of victory. There are usually 10, 5, 2, and 1 minute warnings warning the captains of when the race will start. The Yachtmaster II Rolex watch emulates this with a countdown timer from 10 minutes.

It’s not the watch, but the people who bought and wore this watch, that gave it a bad rep IMHO.

I mean... We had digital countdown timers where everyone was looking at the same reference. Nobody needed to "sync" their watches. And the crew of sailors work together to make sure that the boat crosses the start line as soon as the race starts.
Sometimes there are two or three digital countdown clocks on the boat.
And I could see the large countdown clock on land. On huge boats, like in Americas Cup, they have real professionals. With hundreds of millions of dollars on the line - the budget of some teams - these real professionals don't use watches neither. They're...

for that informative explanation!!! On my powerboat I rely mostly on my PO Chrono because I can time two events simultaneously for instance over all trip time and elapsed time from last refueling. Thank you again⛵️⛵️⛵️
