The Explorer ii is “the” sports Rolex. The 40mm case size is right up my alley, can’t fit the new maxi case on my mini wrist. With your new datejust this might be a 2 watch collection to cover nearly all the bases.

I understand your concern. But a watch is meant ti be worn, to bring us smile every time we glance at our wrist
I would suggest you wear it more often and just enjoy it . Every 10 years you could have it serviced and re-finish the case.
