Many millions of people have owned gold watches, including footballers, rappers and supermodels in addition to regular folks. Gold is not that soft and cases are not that thin you can wear them out in a lifetime. If they were, there would be far fewer gold watches being handed down over generations.
Polishing is only a big issue if you do it poorly and you are trying to remove gouges or sharp cuts on edges of lugs or bezels. The original factory can do wonders because they have experience, fixtures and tools.
In my opinion, local guys with a polishing machine (like me) and the right compounds can make fine scratches less noticeable but shouldn’t be tackling multi-link bracelets or sharp edges. And owners should be setting to work with abrasive tools or compounds.
Every watch lover needs a gold watch (or three) — if you love it, buy it. Just don’t abuse it.
Cheers,
