Certificate of authenticity?
I am not sure that any such certificate can mean anything. Rolex themselves will not be able to verify that the watch is "as it was born" so long as all the parts are genuine Rolex. That is really the question. A certificate of authenticity will only really say that the parts are all genuine Rolex. Nobody...not even Rolex....can verify that the watch is now as it was born.
The serial number is possible, but like I have said, would I be comfortable buying this watch???.....on that score my answer would be not especially comfortable at this point. It is outside the range where a number of Reds have been found. Of course, i am open minded on this as 163xxx is not a long way away and it is very possible that a second batch was made. Indeed, one example 168xxx does exist. If 3 or 4 such examples come to light in a 16xxxx range, and they all have similar closed 6 pattern, then of course this will raise the probability that a second batch did exist. At this point, I am really looking to build evidence for this second batch. As for the caseback, I would not be happy with that...it would be "an issue" for me.
If you can get a close scan....that would be great
