Yes, I greatly prefer this dial to the current generation...
but Rolex will never revisit their former and better design language. As you know, I also dislike the current submariner maxi-case/maxi-indices/maxi-handset, and find them totally disproportioned and unharmonious with the lug to strap shoulder junction, although it is possible that Rolex will revisit this poor choice now that the large watch trend is abating. Why Rolex kept the 40mm bezel/dial size and increased the bulk of the case shoulders/lugs rather than symmtrically make a larger 41/41.5 mm watch with larger movement has always mystified me.
All to say, again, there are no Rolex watches in my modest watch set, and this:
remains my only explorer-type watch... a more cerebral and less common choice, which makes it all the more appealing!

Interesting. I will say the Air King beats the Explorer as a daily and a travel watch, except if you have to be a bit more formal, then the Explorer maybe a better choice...

I think they're actually complementary..
And it could be a 2-watch collection. The thickness of the AK (not to mention the dial) makes it more a weekender/fun piece. The Explorer on the other hand, being 2mm thinner, nicely straddles the line between business and casual. Not to mention the fact ...
