during this time of ...depression .... dilemma about pursuing one's passion, any suggestion about the future of collecting watches. thanks

I've got a friend who wears a gold rolex datejust that's probably 30 years old, anyway, he says if you're gonna buy a watch, buy a solid gold one, because if you ever need to eat or a bed to sleep in and you need to hock or sell it, the "guts" (movement) ... 

Gold is good, of course. But with Rolex, the SS models are universally more desirable,except in rare examples. The SS model which is sought after is worth far more than its gold counterparts, generally. I do say this without meaning to denigrate the advic... 

SS all the way... Hold up better and resale MUCH, much better!

i know the question was about market value, but it seems to me that gold vs. ss would also depend on the particular watch. some just look better, to me at least, in one metal or the other. i think a day-date looks great in white gold. submariner looks gre...
