I'm sorry Nicolas....

While I agree that the Red (Single and Double) 6542 GMTs are great, the one you pictured here is a fake.  Its a "Yuki" (or similar) version of the real thing.  I've attached pics of the Yuki 6542 GMT dial, which oddly is no longer for sale on their website anymore, after a prominent dealer posted one as real previously.

Not the exaggerated serifs on the lettering, which is uncharacteristic of Rolex across all models.  You can refer to the pics that Marcello posted for a genuine example.

Best,
Eric

This is the Rolex GMT MASTER 6542 which would make me sell my 6542.

Yes, yes, there are few chances that I sell my 6542, which is an almost absolute keeper. Among the few chances, this 6542 from 1955: Which are the specificities? A long hour hand, the GMT MASTER in Red, and a sublime dial. Ok, mine has a superb dial, too,...

Your dial is a real cherry.

You need post a picture of watch at the same angle. You will fall in love with it again. A+ Bill

I had no doubt.

I am sure this one is never leaving your side or should I say wrist. Bill

Yep, never! [nt]

I think you already have a wonderful one

even if I never had one in my hands to confirm it. I fell on this picture of the same version as yours lately and this is one of my favorite vintage Rolex diver. Cheers, Mark ...

Diver? Hell no! Water resistant to only 50 meters... From the beach. ;)

But you will have to test it in the real to fully appreciate it. Thanks, Mark. Best, Nicolas.

As a Vintage newbie...

I considered the Submariners/seadwelers/GMT (which have the same kind of case) as divers :p Maybe I should find a new name ;)

Noted in my text book ;) [nt]

I had the privilege of checking some years ago ; hands are the same you find in 6200 : " lollipop " seconds hand , " swan neck " hours hand and very long minutes hand : ...

Great pictures

I knew from Philipp Stahl once that the earliest GMT 6542 had this long neck hour and and large lollipop seconds but never have seen one. Thank you so much for sharing - a pleasure to see such an early GMT master. Best Edmond

Yes, the large lollipop is another top detail, too.

Falling on such a seasnake is certainly not every day. Fascinating. Best, Nicolas

Some very fine pictures of a very fine watch.

Rarity

By: Le Monde Edmond : April 11th, 2015-02:52
Nicolas I recall one of our earlier conversations about rarity. You said you didn't care that much about it and it was not the most important factor. Have you changed your mind since then? For me I like an early 6542 is nice to have but it is not a must h...

red 6542 is f...ing rare : for what I know less than two dozens made ( including also the rarest " double red " with the line of maximum depth ) .. so we can estimate the value of the single red at no less 4-5 times than a 6542 with standard dial.

I fear you are right about the value of a Red 6542.

 By: amanico : April 11th, 2015-03:36
Aaah, by the way, you wrote " f... ng " rare. Sorry for my bad English, but F stands for? :) Best, Nicolas

LOL LOL LOL

wanna see more pics ??? this watch is quite different from regular production 6542 as case is thiner with very long lugs and also dial is not the very same you have in later watches : it has a sort of " half-matt " finish ( same you have in 1st series SCO...

I have always wondered about the hands

 By: Bill : April 11th, 2015-07:29
The length of the minute and 24hr and even the hour for that matter. You would imagine the hour and minute could be from other Rolex models so Rolex used them on the GMT but the the 24Hr must just be the early models where just super long. You some time s...

Yes correct

Thats what makes collecting fun. Some watches that most people kill for - you would have to kill me to wear them. Many paul newman Daytona are such an example. But there are others. Regarding your numbers I am not sure that can be correct. According to yo...

around two dozens red and double red 6542 have been produced. the total amount of steel 6542 is probably in the range of 1200-1500 if you consider that only 600 went to USA.

Agreed on the guess estimate 6542 production number.

 By: amanico : April 11th, 2015-23:12
Something circa 2 000 in steel, and maybe less than 1000 in gold. Due to the number of 6542 delivered to the US in its production years, 605, according to Rolex itself in the ad where they ask their client to send their 6542 back to Rolex to change the in...

How many bakelite then?

By: Le Monde Edmond : April 13th, 2015-12:10
What can we assume then is the nr of 6542 with Bakelite? Any numbers that you have heard of?

in my opinion ...

 By: marcello pisani : April 14th, 2015-01:57
all 6542 were made with the bakelite insert.

it's another fable told by some dealers ...

 By: marcello pisani : April 14th, 2015-02:20
to promote watches with replaced inserts .. same sad thing happened years ago with early 5513 milsubs ...when a famous dealer trying to brainwash collectors with this bullshit : " early 5513 came out from Rolex with a standard insert " ( not continous ) ,...

pas de quoi and ....

 By: marcello pisani : April 14th, 2015-02:40
about milsubs another crazy fable promoted in the early 2000s was that every year the MOD begun gain from number 001 instead of giving the first free number avalaible ; so in this way every year / delivery number matching was correct !!!!

I think you would need to sell a lot more than the 6542....

 By: Miranda : April 13th, 2015-10:47
for a bit of red ink, maybe I am getting old, but Rolex idiosyncracies dont add to the extra ££££££ that people want. underline, double swiss, red writing (except DRSD/Red sub), you can keep them just my opinion!!!! Best Imran

It is not only the red writing, in this case, but the sum of details.

 By: amanico : April 13th, 2015-12:11
But you are right... I am not ready to pay 4 times the price of a nice 6542 for it. Best, Nicolas

I'm sorry Nicolas....
