I think it's all about respect, respect to the people developing, creating, thinking, drawing, designing, making, and the rest of people involved in the creation of "something". (That's why I don't like fakes). It's just a lack of respect.
I guess, Mc Enroe's comments are, as you say, about the materials used to make the watch, and from ignorance. I would not worry about them. The final customer won't.
