does good closeups, grab shots, documentary images.... what most folks are doing with phones but its better, it does more, its "a camera" and is more versatile. Unfortunately Sony stopped making this line. Too bad as the last ones (TX series) actually had two curved LED flashes around the lens. Very close to a full ring flash. Now that they are out of production people want an arm and a leg for them. For easy to tote travel needs I love the Sony RX-10s. Close to a pro level camera in a small package with fast Zeiss glass. 1" sensor is more than adequate for displaying on a computer while allowing tremendous focal length range with excellent speed.
They have decent macro ability but not equal to a true macro lens, some phones or those TX cameras. Other manufacturers make similar products. Tons of great system choices with or without mirrors, more cost,
more "stuff" to carry around ... but it sounds like you've abandoned that concept. You're not alone! For pro macro shots probably best to look at FF or APSC with a real macro lens... and a light box.

the traditional approach is full frame digital, with a macro prime of approx 100mm to keep a good working distance from the target to avoid shadows (etc.), a tripod, live view, a type of light box arrangement (doesn't have to be expensive), a light source...
