Waxing is "Maxing," or growing with light until a full moon is reached. Waning is the opposite, or decreasing after a full moon, and is always illuminated on the left in the Northern Hemisphere. The waxing or waning Gibbous moon means more than half of the moon is illuminated.
The moon is actually quite bright...
Suggested exposures for photos of the moon (at ISO 100)
EV15 The Moon at altitude > 40° - Full (e.g. f/5.6 at 1/1000 sec)
EV14 The Moon at altitude > 40° - Gibbous (e.g. f/5.6 at 1/500 sec)
EV13 The Moon at altitude > 40° - Quarter (e.g. f/5.6 at 1/250 sec)
EV12 The Moon at altitude > 40° - Crescent (e.g. f/5.6 at 1/125 sec)
Suggested exposures for subjects lit only by moonlight (at ISO 1600)
EV-2 Moonlight, Moon at altitude > 40° - Full (e.g. f/1.4 at 1/2 sec)
EV-3 Moonlight, Moon at altitude > 40° - Full (e.g. f/1.4 at 1 sec)
EV-4 Moonlight, Moon at altitude > 40° - Gibbous (e.g. f/1.4 at 2 sec)
EV-6 Moonlight, Moon at altitude > 40° - Quarter (e.g. f/1.4 at 8 sec)
When in remote areas during the recent trip to Hokkaido I could see a full sky of stars... beautiful and something that I really miss living in an urban setting. It's a subject I would love to photography... with improved technical skills.
