Another trick that sometimes works (depending on the quality of the original image) is to use post process one with increased gamma and one with decreased gamma and layer the three images (original, + gamma, and -gamma)... YMMV

The shot below caused me issues. How could i have exposed it better. Clearly there is a shadow dividing line and that had me scratching my head. Experts....how would you have dealt with this? ...
Not possible with a single exposure – you’d have needed to take at least two shots, with the second exposed for the dark fore and mid ground.
After that, in post (processing), you’d have combined the two/three shots to provide a single image with the whole frame exposed favourably. If you’ve shot that in RAW, then there’s a fair chance you could recover some of the detail in the shadow – possib...
so, without a tripod, quite tricky.
Yes, with a tripod I could have bracketed 6 or so images and then merged them.....good idea.
as mentioned, layering is one option...
and having recently shot with ND Grad filters, that might be another choice. You might have some success with exposing for the trees and recovering the foreground in post... or using a PL filter to darken the sky. As an alternative you could convert to B&...

I would add a gradiant mask to the picture ...
... that works like an ND gradiant, but in the software, you are able to define more factors. Marcus
