Bird Wars

In previous articles I called "Wild Kingdom", I showed the Raptors living in trees in our canyon. Today we are surrounded by cawing crows (or some mean black birds) that are trying to drive an owl out of my rubber tree.

He is up high, carefully concealed, and minding his own business, taking a nap. But the black birds are tormenting him constantly and annoying me considerably with their noise.  My wife tossed a few rocks and shouted and they took off again. The owl was not bothered - he / she knows we are no threat.

Our big hawk then came swooping down from the next-door pine tree, to sit in the rubber tree and give the owl some company. We will see how it all pans out.

Previous photos of the Hawk

Our neighbors down the street got some chickens recently - 7 different hens - a few large and the rest tiny. I wonder if that's what is drawing all these birds in our direction?

lovely portrait of the stately owl, particularly that first photograph. I grew up next to a neighbor who raised chickens. If I remember correctly they didn't make all that much noise. One thing I do remember was their reaction to rain... Short shower and ...

On a normal day we don't hear the chickens, but on a quiet morning they are quite evident
