Backup Camera
Jun 05, 2019,01:00 AM
I like to travel with my camera and in recent years that means 2-4 weeks away from Tokyo. Typically winter time in Hokkaidō, Tōhoku (Aomori), or Northern Kantō (Nagano & Niigata). The last couple of years it's been 2-3 extended trips a year as I ramp up the travel.
On these photo shoots I have been carrying a Nikon F3P film camera, a Fujifilm x100t digital camera, and a Nikon F3HP film body as backup... with the other gear (lenses, tripod, filter system, film, light meter, etc.) it adds up and adds to the weight.
So I've been thinking... why not leave the x100t behind and carry a digital camera that accepts my manual focus lenses... eliminate one camera and related accessories. It's clear I have too much thinking time on my hands.
One of the prime backup candidates is the full frame mirrorless Nikon Z6 with FTZ adapter... street price of about USD 1,800 online from the big NY stores, (reality check) that's about what I paid for a brand new Chevy Blazer after graduating from university... times change.
As a backup the Nikon Z6 checks all the major boxes plus opens the possibility of using my M-mount and LTM lenses...
The online reviews always bring up the lack of exif (e.g. aperture) data for MF lenses... not a problem as I have been and continue to shoot old film cameras. Another issue mentioned is auto focus... again all my film cameras are manual focus and the Z6 has zoom-able live view (back screen and finder), in camera stabilization, and focus peaking e.g. with MF lenses... another plus is a lockable diopter adjustment... how great is that.
Down side is I like the results from the Fujifilm x100t, the street price of the Z6 is 49% more expensive in Japan compared to US prices... AND do I really need another camera.
