Moon Surprise: Lunar Craters Are Bigger on Near Side

Apr 03, 2020,15:24 PM

The moon phase is one of my favorite watch complications... living in the city, with it's distractions and tall structures, I don't always notice the moon, so the 'complication' is a beautiful reminder... a reminder of nature, and a connection with the larger cycles of life.

Absolutely stunning photo of our nearest neighbor... just beautiful

Hello Photography lovers, Here is a shot of the moon with a Nikon 800mm + 1.25x teleconverter, which equals to 1000mm. I rent this telephoto lens for 1 day just for the above purpose, and as you can imagine, i was very sad when it was time to give it back...

That's a fantastic shot.

It must have been a lot of fun and the result is amazing! Just out of curiosity. When you use your setup described, how big is the moon in the frame captured? Do you need t9 crop a lot or how is it? Thank you Christian

Yes, i cropped the pic.

I’ve been trying to do the same with Nikon 400 mm But I’m struggling with settings. Autofocus off Shutter as fast as possible given max f stop You’ve got any tips to share?

Use manual focus for sure. Try using live view mode, then use the zoom button to get closer to the moon and set the focus manually. If shooting with DSLR, use "MUT" mode (on Nikon) to avoid the slight movement of the camera due to the opening and closing ...

I’m using a Nikon D7500 with the Nikon prime 300 mm lens and a very stable tripod (that Italian brand which I can’t recall this quickly) I used timer delayed shooting so me pressing the button won’t move the camera. I’ll keep on trying thanks for your inp...

I think you're talking about Manfrotto. Be careful, timer delayed shooting will not impede the mirror to open and close

 By: Horological_addict : April 5th, 2020-00:49
When you take a picture, the mirror will open and close. This opening-closing movement can make your camera slightly shake. Despite the fact it's a slight movement, it can still blur a little bit your picture (it's more noticeable when using a telephoto l...

So I took your advise, missed the moonrise but decided on the moonset. Dragged all camera equipment upstairs and than thru a narrow escape /maintenace ladder to the door that leads to the roof. The moon was still to high to shoot good pictures and I had a...
