You may not believe it! :-)
But I am pretty sure that I am the only person on this forum with only one watch at present, the Patek 7200 London Edition. This will last until Saturday when I collect my Moser. I have two others on deposit, the RW Smith Series 2 (ETA 2020) and the discontinued Patek 5940G (ETA anytime up to 2028 assuming I keep paying £300 per month against it based on my special arrangement with my AD! 
) But to answer your question, my ideal number is 5(all of the above plus perhaps a Gronefeld Remontoire or a Lange 1815 chronograph (yes, that gorgeous black dial beauty!) or a Voutilainen! For me, it is important to be able to have the time to wear my watches (and I am not talking about once a month) so 5 is about my maximum so that I am able to spread the love around equally!
