Yes, virtually all spring bars are steel and can be used on gold watches
In my opinion, the likelihood of wear is slim, UNLESS you change watch straps constantly, OR if you have an expansion bracelet with ends that have springs pressing against the inside of the lugs.
I have changed bracelets and straps on dozens of gold watches and can remember only 2 that had damaged lugs requiring some repair and they were from the Seventies or earlier, so 50 years of wear.
Here's a gold-plated watch where you can see some damage but I say that's from bad technique changing the straps rather than the spring-bar wearing into the case.
If it was really a problem, the Web would be filled with pictures of the worn lugs. I can't find any... and I don't have the images of the one watch I got repaired - it requied only a few seconds of laser welding.
