Warm welcome on WatchProSite!
Several ref. 3796SJ can be found online, attesting that it isn't a myth.
Some even come with papers.
You can follow the links below to see by yourself:
If I'm not mistaken, the one you tried on is sold by Empire Time NY (which is
shown online here).
The movement number on the watch you've tried on (1'852'006) is very consistent with the certificates below (1'852'019 & 1'852'015), which is a good sign, imo.
Without papers (and box), 20k seems a bit high to me. But it's a nice (and rare) watch.
I wish you the best for making your decision.
Best, Emmanuel

I have been looking at the 3796 a lot lately, all versions of it. Like you, in the digging / research that I’ve done I have only seen references to the White Gold Japanese LE. But I was not necessarily looking for that, it just so happened it comes up a l...

I'm leaning toward passing on it. Based on everyone's feedback, it seems like this is a legit example but I'm not super keen on the condition and it's certainly not a bargain at 20K given the condition.

Thank you so much for sharing these examples from Japan. I'm leaning toward passing on this find and looking for something in better condition. I'll be out there in July (I go once a year). I've done my walks around Ginza and Nakano Broadway but there are...
